Registered Nurse - Medical Surgical Float Pool

Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and adaptable Registered Nurse to join our Medical Surgical Float Pool in Hilo, Hawaii. This role involves providing comprehensive nursing care to a diverse patient population across various medical and surgical units within the facility.

The successful candidate will float between units such as Medical (77 beds), Laulima (Surgical Acute, 18 beds), and occasionally the Cardiovascular Unit (15 beds). Patient ratios typically range from 1:6 for days/evenings and 1:8 for nights on Medical units, 1:6 on Laulima, and 1:4 on the Cardiovascular Unit, though ratios may vary based on staffing needs.

This position offers an opportunity to gain broad experience in a dynamic hospital environment, working night shifts to support critical patient care needs across multiple specialties.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide direct patient care to medical and surgical patients across various units, including Medical, Surgical Acute (Laulima), and occasionally Cardiovascular.
  • Assess, plan, implement, and evaluate patient care plans in accordance with professional nursing standards and facility policies.
  • Administer medications and treatments as prescribed, monitoring for effectiveness and adverse reactions.
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary healthcare teams to ensure comprehensive patient care.
  • Educate patients and their families on health conditions, treatments, and discharge planning.
  • Maintain accurate and timely documentation of patient care activities.
  • Respond to emergent situations and provide appropriate interventions.
Required Qualifications
  • Minimum of 2 years of recent experience as a Registered Nurse in a medical-surgical setting.
  • Demonstrated ability to float effectively between different units and adapt to varying patient populations and acuity levels.
  • Proof of immunity as required by facility policy; medical and religious exemption requests will not be accepted.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in a Cardiovascular Unit.
  • Certifications: PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support), Procedural Sedation, TNCC (Trauma Nursing Core Course), ENPC (Emergency Nursing Pediatric Course).
Skills & Competencies
  • Proficiency with Electronic Medical Record (EMR) systems, specifically Meditech.
  • Competency in medication dispensing systems, such as Pyxis.
  • Clinical skills: Wound vac management, chest tube care, general medical-surgical nursing procedures.
  • Strong critical thinking, problem-solving, and decision-making abilities.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced and dynamic environment.
  • Adaptability and flexibility to meet changing unit needs.
Shift Details
