Job Summary
We are seeking a highly skilled and adaptable Registered Nurse for a Medical Surgical Float Pool position in Hilo, Hawaii. This role involves providing comprehensive nursing care to a diverse patient population across various medical and surgical units within an acute care hospital setting.
The successful candidate will float primarily between the Medical Unit (77 beds, 1:6 day/evening ratio, 1:8 night ratio) and the Surgical Acute (Laulima) Unit (18 beds, 1:6 ratio), with occasional assignments to the Cardiovascular Unit (15 beds, 1:4 ratio). This position offers an opportunity to gain broad experience while contributing to a dynamic healthcare team.
Orientation time will be provided for each unit to ensure a smooth transition and competency in diverse patient care environments.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide direct patient care, including assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation, for medical and surgical patients.
- Float to various units, including Medical, Surgical Acute (Laulima), and occasionally Cardiovascular, adapting quickly to different patient populations and unit workflows.
- Administer medications and treatments as prescribed, ensuring patient safety and adherence to protocols.
- Monitor patient conditions, interpret vital signs, and document all observations and interventions accurately in the Electronic Medical Record (EMR).
- Collaborate effectively with physicians, other nurses, and interdisciplinary team members to develop and implement individualized care plans.
- Educate patients and their families on health conditions, treatment plans, and discharge instructions.
- Respond to emergency situations and provide critical care interventions as needed.
- Maintain a clean and safe patient environment.
Required Qualifications
- Minimum of 2 years of recent experience as a Registered Nurse in an acute care setting.
- Ability to float to Medical, Surgical Acute (Laulima), and Cardiovascular units as needed.
- Documented proof of immunity; medical and religious exemption requests will not be accepted.
Preferred Qualifications
- Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification.
- Competency in Procedural Sedation.
- Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC) certification.
- Emergency Nursing Pediatric Course (ENPC) certification.
Skills & Competencies
- Clinical Skills: Comprehensive patient assessment, medication administration, wound care (including wound vac management), chest tube management, IV insertion and maintenance, EKG interpretation.
- Equipment Proficiency: Meditech EMR, Pyxis automated dispensing system.
- Soft Skills: Strong critical thinking, excellent communication (verbal and written), adaptability, problem-solving, teamwork, compassion, and ability to work effectively in fast-paced, dynamic environments.
Shift Details

- Hours: 0645 to 1915 (12-hour shifts)
- Days per Week: 3 days per week, totaling 36 scheduled hours following the first week of orientation.

Licensing Requirements
- Active, unencumbered Hawaii Registered Nurse (RN) license required by the start of the assignment.
