Registered Nurse - Medical Surgical Float Pool
Job Summary
We are seeking a highly skilled and adaptable Registered Nurse for a Medical Surgical Float Pool position in Hilo, Hawaii. This role involves providing comprehensive nursing care to a diverse patient population across various acute care units within a dynamic hospital setting.
The successful candidate will float between the Medical Unit (77 beds), Laulima Unit (Surgical Acute, 18 beds), and occasionally the Cardiovascular Unit (15 beds). Typical nurse-to-patient ratios are 1:6 for days/evenings and 1:8 for nights on the Medical Unit, 1:6 on the Laulima Unit, and 1:4 on the Cardiovascular Unit, though ratios may vary based on staffing needs.
This position offers an opportunity to leverage a broad range of clinical skills while collaborating with an interdisciplinary team to ensure optimal patient outcomes in a supportive environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide direct patient care, including assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation, for medical and surgical patients across various units.
- Administer medications, perform treatments, and manage patient care plans according to physician orders and established protocols.
- Utilize electronic medical records (EMR) for accurate and timely documentation of patient care.
- Operate and monitor various medical equipment, including wound vacs and chest tubes.
- Collaborate effectively with physicians, other nurses, and ancillary staff to ensure coordinated and holistic patient care.
- Respond to emergent situations and provide critical care interventions as needed.
- Educate patients and their families on health conditions, treatment plans, and discharge instructions.
- Maintain a safe and therapeutic environment for patients and staff.
Required Qualifications
- Minimum of 2 years of recent experience as a Registered Nurse in an acute care setting, preferably Medical Surgical.
- Ability to float to Medical, Surgical Acute, and Cardiovascular units.
- Demonstrated compliance with facility-specific immunity and vaccination requirements; medical and religious exemption requests will not be accepted.
Preferred Qualifications
- Certification in Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS).
- Certification in Procedural Sedation.
- Certification in Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC).
- Certification in Emergency Nursing Pediatric Course (ENPC).
Skills & Competencies
- **Clinical Skills:** Advanced assessment, medication administration, wound care (including wound vac management), chest tube management, IV insertion, Foley catheter insertion, EKG interpretation.
- **Technical Skills:** Proficiency with Meditech EMR, Pyxis automated dispensing system.
- **Soft Skills:** Critical thinking, problem-solving, strong communication (verbal and written), adaptability, teamwork, time management, ability to prioritize in a fast-paced environment.

Licensing Requirements
- Active and unrestricted Hawaii Registered Nurse (RN) license required by the start of the assignment.
