Strong medical surgical background due to a variety of patient diagnoses and conditions
Description:
Unit has a total of 32 beds but currently accommodates 20 due to staffing levels.
The nurse-to-patient ratio is no more than 5:1.
This unit accepts both RN and LPN staff.
Common diagnoses and types of patients include:
- Chronic pain
- Congestive heart failure
- Pneumonia
- Abdominal pain
- Pancreatitis
- Orthopedic cases
- Detoxification
- Post-operative surgery patients
- Pediatric patients
The unit does not accept laboring mothers or involve titration of cardiac drips or insulin drips.
Nurses are not required to titrate drips.
The unit has ICU monitors; reading strips is managed by the unit, and documentation occurs through faxed reports.
There will be a house supervisor who makes assignments, but there is no charge nurse taking assignments on this unit.
Nurse aides are available on the unit with a ratio of three aides per shift.
Respiratory therapy equipment includes CPAP and BiPAP, which staff will assist and manage alongside high-flow oxygen.
The shifts are 12 hours long, running from 6:45 PM to 7:15 AM, and there may be opportunities for extra shifts.
The manager is open to accommodating requests for block scheduling.
Weekends are required every other week.
Holiday scheduling rotates among regular staff.
Floating to assist other units as needed is a requirement.
The dress code allows for any scrubs apart from camo or orange.
The unit will provide department-specific orientation lasting 3-5 days, including tours, introductions, and discussions about policies.
