Registered Nurse - Medical Surgical Float Pool
Job Summary
Join our dynamic nursing team in Hilo, Hawaii, as a Medical Surgical Float Pool Registered Nurse. This role offers the opportunity to provide high-quality patient care across various acute care units, including Medical, Surgical Acute (Laulima), and occasionally Cardiovascular units. You will care for a diverse patient population, utilizing your broad clinical skills in a supportive environment.
As a Float Pool RN, you will be integral to maintaining staffing levels and ensuring continuous patient care across different specialties. The Medical unit has 77 beds with a typical 1:6 day/evening and 1:8 night nurse-to-patient ratio, while the Surgical Acute (Laulima) unit has 18 beds with a 1:6 ratio, and the Cardiovascular unit has 15 beds with a 1:4 ratio. Orientation will be provided for each unit to ensure a smooth transition and comprehensive understanding of unit-specific protocols.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide comprehensive nursing care to medical and surgical patients across various units.
- Perform patient assessments, develop individualized care plans, implement interventions, and evaluate patient outcomes.
- Administer medications and treatments accurately and safely.
- Document all patient care activities, observations, and interventions thoroughly in the electronic medical record (EMR).
- Operate and manage various medical equipment, including wound vacs and chest tubes.
- Collaborate effectively with physicians, specialists, and other healthcare team members to ensure coordinated patient care.
- Adhere to all hospital policies, procedures, and regulatory standards.
- Float to assigned units, including Medical, Laulima (Surgical Acute), and Cardiovascular units as needed.
Required Qualifications
- Minimum of 2 years of recent acute care Registered Nurse experience.
- Demonstrated proof of immunity as per facility policy; medical and religious exemption requests will not be accepted.
Preferred Qualifications
- Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification.
- Procedural Sedation certification.
- Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC) certification.
- Emergency Nursing Pediatric Course (ENPC) certification.
Skills & Competencies
- Clinical Skills: Advanced patient assessment, medication administration, wound care management, chest tube management, IV insertion, phlebotomy, EKG interpretation.
- Equipment Proficiency: Meditech EMR, Pyxis automated dispensing system, Wound Vac systems, Chest Tube drainage systems.
- Soft Skills: Strong critical thinking, problem-solving, adaptability, excellent communication (verbal and written), teamwork, ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment.

Licensing Requirements
