Job Title: Registered Nurse - Medical Surgical Float Pool Profession: Nursing Specialty: Medical Surgical Duration: 13 weeks Shift: 12-hour Day Shift Hours per Shift: 36 Experience: Minimum of 2 years MedSurg experience License: RN Certifications: Required BLS, ACLS, NIHSS Must-Have: Chest tubes, stable trach management, IV skills, port/central lines, knowledgeable on CPAP/BiPAP/Airvo, foley insertion/care, feeding tubes, cardiac rhythm interpretation. Titrating Drips: Cardizem, amiodarone, insulin, argatroban. Description: This position involves floating to various units within the facility, providing care to MedSurg patients. Patients cared for may include those in general medical surgical oncology, orthopedic, neuro observation, and cardiac post-procedure categories. There are pediatric patients on the oncology floor; pediatric experience is not required, as travelers will not take pediatric patients. Common diagnoses include cellulitis, GI bleeds, CHF, COPD, chest pain, dizziness, syncope, heart failure, and cardiac arrhythmias. The patient ratios are 1:4-6 during days and 1:6 at night. There is a charge nurse who takes patient assignments, with nurse support from other staff members. The charting system in use is an electronic medical record system. Traveling nurses may be required to float frequently to accommodate patient needs. Shifts are scheduled 4-6 weeks in advance, with weekend rotation expected every other weekend. Holiday expectations may require working 50% of designated holidays. The work environment focuses on teamwork and is welcoming to travelers. Scrubs must be solid colors without graphics or logos.
