Job Summary
Join the dedicated nursing team at MVHS-Wynn in Utica, New York, on our 7th Floor Medical-Surgical Stroke Stepdown unit. This 64-bed unit specializes in providing high-quality care to adult patients requiring close monitoring and specialized interventions.
The patient population includes individuals recovering from stroke, as well as those presenting with altered mental status, renal conditions (including dialysis), COPD, CHF, pneumonia, and various general medical-surgical and pulmonary issues. As a Registered Nurse on this unit, you will play a crucial role in managing complex patient needs and contributing to positive patient outcomes.
This role involves comprehensive nursing care, utilizing specialized equipment, and collaborating with an interdisciplinary team to deliver exceptional patient-centered care. Floating to other units may be required based on facility needs.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide direct patient care to adult patients on a Medical-Surgical Stroke Stepdown unit.
- Monitor and manage patients with complex conditions including stroke, altered mental status, renal issues, COPD, CHF, and pulmonary conditions.
- Administer medications and treatments as prescribed, ensuring patient safety and adherence to protocols.
- Utilize and manage specialized equipment such as IV pumps, nasogastric (N/G) tubes, and feeding tubes.
- Conduct thorough patient assessments, develop individualized care plans, and evaluate patient responses to interventions.
- Collaborate effectively with physicians, therapists, and other healthcare professionals to optimize patient care.
- Document patient assessments, interventions, and outcomes accurately and timely in the electronic health record.
- Adhere to all hospital policies, procedures, and safety standards, including infection control practices.
- Float to other units as required by facility needs to support patient care across the hospital.
Required Qualifications
- Current Registered Nurse (RN) license.
- Minimum of 2 years of recent experience in Medical-Surgical nursing with specific experience in a Stroke Stepdown unit.
- Prior travel nursing experience is required.
- Ability to work on-site in Utica, New York.

- Clinical Skills: Proficient in stroke care, neurological assessment, management of altered mental status, renal care (including dialysis patients), respiratory management (COPD, CHF, pneumonia), and general medical-surgical nursing.

Licensing Requirements
- Current Registered Nurse (RN) license in the state of New York (or compact license eligible for NY).
- Current American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
- Current National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification (can be obtained prior to start date).
