Common diagnoses treated include pneumonia, congestive heart failure, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, renal disease, sepsis, stroke, and overflow general surgical patients. RNs are not required to titrate drips. Common drips include Heparin per protocol and antibiotics. There are two charge nurses on each shift who do not take assignments. There are also two Break Nurses on each shift. Certified Nursing Assistants (CNA) are available, with a ratio of 1:7 on days and 1:11 on nights. Some patients may not have a CNA assigned. CNA duties include assistance with activities of daily living, vital signs, and capillary blood glucose checks if delegated. RNs may troubleshoot CPAP and occasional BiPAP machines. Telemetry technicians are available to read strips and send them to the electronic medical record, but RNs must verify the rhythm using a Philips system. The schedule consists of three 12-hour shifts from 1845-0715, with the manager creating the schedule and considering block scheduling. Weekend and holiday requirements depend on staffing needs. There is no call or standby requirement, but RNs may be placed on standby three times during the contract or can volunteer for it. Floating to surgical floor and progressive care unit may be required, within skill set. Any color scrubs are acceptable, but scrubs are not provided. Unit orientation consists of two 12-hour shifts. The team is welcoming with a family feel and has a lot of new graduates. There is an option to go permanent if a good fit is established. The hospital can cancel up to four shifts per 13-week assignment. The charting system in use is MEDITECH.
