Description:
Med/Surg Nurses provide direct and individualized nursing care to patients based on the application of scientific nursing principles.
In addition to general nursing care, responsibilities of Med/Surg Nurses include:
Consulting and coordinating with health care team members to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate patient care plans.
Preparing and administering (orally, subcutaneously, through an IV) and recording prescribed medications.
Reporting adverse reactions to medications or treatments in accordance with policy.
Educating patients on surgical procedures.
Recording patients' medical information and vital signs.
Monitoring and adjusting specialized equipment used on patients, and interpreting and recording electronic displays.
Initiating corrective action whenever the patient displays adverse symptoms.
Providing bedside care for a wide variety of medical patients, including pre- and post-surgery patients.
Initiating patient education plans as prescribed by a physician.
Teaching patients and significant others how to manage their illness or injury, explaining post-treatment home care needs.
Changing dressings, inserting catheters, and starting IVs.
Preparing equipment and aiding physicians during examinations and treatment of patients.
Responding to life-saving situations based upon nursing standards and protocol.
Participating in discharge planning.
Utilizing time management skills.
Recording all care information concisely, accurately, completely, and in a timely manner.
Performing other position-related duties as assigned, depending on the assignment setting.
