Job Title: Registered Nurse Profession: RN Specialty: Medical-Surgical Duration: 18 weeks Shift: Night Hours per Shift: 12 Experience: 2 years of recent experience required License: Required Certifications: BLS Must-Have: Post Operative Recovery Experience Description: Department specializes in Medical-Surgical care. Required nurse-to-patient ratios are 1:4-5 during the day and 1:5-6 during the night. Common diagnoses include Post-Operative conditions such as General, Orthopedic, and Podiatry cases. General Medical cases include Diabetes Mellitus, Peripheral Neuropathy, Congestive Heart Failure, and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease. Staff is trained in managing care for conditions like cellulitis, continuous bladder irrigation, and peritoneal dialysis. Experience with surgical drains and wound vacuums is beneficial. Nurses are not required to titrate drips. Patients may be on telemetry, which is centrally monitored by a monitor technician. Nurses do not read telemetry; validation is performed by a telemetry nurse. Charge nurses have patient assignments. House supervisors are available 24/7 but do not have direct patient assignments. Nurse aides are present on the unit to assist with patient care based on acuity. The typical nurse aide-to-patient ratio is 1:12-14. Some aides are cross-trained in phlebotomy and have experience performing 12-lead EKGs, if applicable. Respiratory therapy equipment includes BiPAP, high-flow oxygen, and Vapotherm, which are managed by respiratory therapists. Shifts are scheduled based on need, managed by nursing leadership. There is a requirement to work every other weekend and participate in holiday rotation. There are no call or standby requirements for agency staff. Floating to ICU or Telemetry units may be required for medical-surgical overflow, but only within the nurse’s scope of practice. Professional scrubs of any color are acceptable. Department-specific orientation includes a structured program with preceptor support.
