Patient ratios on the unit are 1:4 to 1:5. Unit staffing includes secretaries and patient care technicians. Types of equipment utilized include traction, fixators, and cooling equipment. The documentation system in use is Meditech. Scheduling requires 3 twelve-hour shifts and 3 weekend shifts per schedule period. Contract labor is the first to float to other medical-surgical level of care units. Floating may occur to general medical-surgical, nephrology, and neuro/trauma units. Patient experience criteria include bedside shift report and hourly rounding. The unit performs post-operative care for knee, hip, and shoulder replacements. Trauma patients are also managed on the unit, with some overflow from neurology. Certification in NIH is advantageous. The dress code mandates navy scrubs.
