The unit consists of 20 beds dedicated to medical and surgical patients. We care for a diverse adult patient population with various diagnoses including substance abuse, severe psychiatric conditions, DKA, sepsis, GI bleed, respiratory failure, cardiac arrest, renal failure, and cardiogenic shock. Both attendings and residents are present in the ICU 24 hours a day. Experienced nurses are expected to handle a patient-to-nurse ratio of 1:2 or 1:1 with high acuity patients. When floated to other Medical/Surgical areas, the ratio may adjust to 1:4 or 1:5. Telemetry competency is required as part of this role. Shifts will include rotating between day and night positions. This is a critical role in providing care to patients with complex and acute medical needs. Nurses must be adaptable and prepared for floating responsibilities as needed.
