Job Title: Registered Nurse Profession: Nursing Specialty: Medical Intensive Care Unit Duration: 13 weeks Shift: Day 3x12-Hour Hours per Shift: 12 hours Experience: Minimum of 1 year required in specialty License: Current valid compact nursing license required Certifications: ACLS, BLS, NIHSS Must-Have: - Previous Charge Experience: 2 years - Patient Ratio Experience: 2-3 patients - Experience with Epic charting system Description: This position involves working in a high acuity, fast-paced medical intensive care unit. The care will be provided for medically complex, critically ill patients, including those with respiratory failure requiring noninvasive or mechanical ventilation. Nurses will manage patients post central venous line and cardiac arrest with therapeutic hypothermia. There will be a focus on managing multisystem organ failure, various shock states, strokes post TPA, COVID, ARDS, DKA, and alcohol withdrawal. Each shift will have 1 Certified Nursing Assistant to assist with patient care. The standard patient ratio is 2:1; however, this may increase to 4:1 when boarders are present. Travelers may be required to float to telemetry units based on census. Frequent procedures include bedside central and arterial line placements, chest tube placement, rapid sequence intubation, thoracentesis, and code blue. Nurses are expected to demonstrate skills in arterial line management, assistance with chest tube procedures, ventilator management, and interpretation of arterial blood gases. The unit is supported by interdisciplinary teams including respiratory therapy, pharmacy, and social services. Nurses must commit to working during weekends and three of five specified holidays. The facility has a total of 571 staffed beds across campuses and utilizes a specific charting system. Emergency protocols and patient safety are paramount in this setting. Nurses are expected to maintain high professional standards while providing critical care.
