The RN assumes responsibility for a group of patients for a designated time frame. The RN provides care to these patients utilizing the nursing process. The nursing process includes nursing trends, technology, financial and human resources. The care provided aligns with the institution's philosophy. Responsibilities include performing all duties specific to the unit's scope of service. The RN implements procedures and theories related to the specific area of practice. Maintaining up-to-date and accurate documentation of nursing care is essential. Documentation assures integration of information for the healthcare team. The RN completes an initial assessment upon patient admission. A plan of care is then developed in accordance with unit standards. The plan is based on patient and family needs. The RN implements the plan of care, nursing interventions, and patient care procedures. The plan of care is modified based on continuous evaluation. The RN takes responsibility for patient and employee safety. This includes reporting and/or correcting safety hazards and incidents. Effective communication with others is vital to resolve issues. Constructive feedback is offered to assist in the professional development of peers. Collaboration with colleagues helps expand the RN's knowledge base. Identifying personal learning needs and taking the initiative for solutions is encouraged. The RN fulfills all requirements of departmental competencies.
