  • Beds: 24 – private rooms (4 rooms are for ventilators)

Patient Types:
  • Medical: COPD, chest pain, post cardiac cath (recovered in another unit first), COVID, DM, cellulitis, chronic trachs, wounds, ventilators, surgicals, heart failure
    • Average LOS: 5-10 days
  • Surgical: laps, no big surgeries
  • Vented patients: travelers will care for vented patients- will receive a 2-3hr vent class. RNs only manage the patient, RT manages the vent.
Patient Ratios:

  • Day/Eves: 1:4-5
  • Night: 1:6-7
  • Tech:
    • Day: 1:6
    • Nights: 1:8
Required Certifications:
  • RN: BLS
Skills required
  • Wound care required, Surgical/post-op care, IV start skills, Wound vacs, PEG tubes, tube feedings, TPN required, trach care (trachs common on this unit)
  • Vent experience required, however there is a class available (3hr class taught by RT, will receive an additional 12hrs of orientation with just vent patients; patients may include but not limited to pts with hypoxic brain injury on a chronic ventilator waiting for placement; max of 4 pts on vents out of 24 beds) – THIS MUST BE AN EXPECTATION OF TRAVELERS BEFORE THEY ARRIVE. – Please ensure that the traveler has experience with vents and is comfortable with them
  • Must have charge experience and is willing and comfortable performing these duties
  • Telemetry required
Support on the Unit:
  • Charge nurse: light patient assignment if staffing allows
  • Unit secretary, 24/7
  • Hospitalist, 24/7
  • RT, 24/7
  • Centralized telemetry monitoring
  • Phlebotomy to assist with peripheral blood draws
  • IV/VAD team – central lines
    • Techs are able to do glucose, vitals, remove IVs
Charting System/Equipment:
  • EPIC – required
  • Alaris
  • Pyxis
  • Client monitors
Floating:
  • all other MSU
  • ED holding – 1:4 ratio
  • Travelers first to float
Orientation
  • NEO: Epic orientation, badge, log in access
  • 12 hr orientation with charge nurse
    • Will assist CRN s patient assignment
Scheduling:
  • Schedule made 6 week at a time, receive 2 week prior
  • Weekend rotation: every other
  • RTO: Email all RTO to NM Raquel Gonzalez
  • On Call: None
  • Holiday Expectations: One holiday per contract
  • AAH adheres to a fatigue policy where all staff, including travelers, cannot work more than 60 hours in a week or 5 consecutive 12 hour shifts
Other notes:
  • Scrub Color: Any - no camo/denim
  • Must document pain level, before and after (1 hour) giving pain medications - The pain score must also meet the pain score with nth medication order i.e. if a patient has a score of 8, the RN cannot give the Tylenol that is ordered for mild 1-3. The RN must call for an order if the patient wants Tylenol for the score of 8.
