Registered Nurse (RN) - MS/Tele Float

Position Overview

This position is a holding support role within the Float Pool. The unit focuses on patients located within the Emergency Department who are awaiting inpatient beds. Nurses will encounter a variety of medical and surgical adult diagnoses, including potentially high-acuity patients. Travelers may also be required to manage MS/Tele cases and float to MedSurg areas as needed.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide care for patients in an holding area of the Emergency Department.
  • Monitor and manage patients requiring MS/Tele care and assist in the care of PCU level patients.
  • Assist in the transition of patients from the Emergency Department to inpatient care.
  • Respond to Emergency Department needs and adapt to varying patient acuity levels.

Required Skills and Certifications

  • Minimum of 2 years of nursing experience.
  • Prior traveler experience is mandatory.
  • Local candidates are accepted.
  • Skills in MS/Tele, interpretation and management of dysrhythmias, telemetry monitoring (both unit and remote), and colostomy care.
  • Experience with managing feeding tubes, renal failure, blood product administration, peripheral line care, phlebotomy, and PICC line management.
  • Proficiency in using rapid response teams, CPAP/BiPAP, and high flow nasal cannula (HFNC).
  • Competency in interpreting ABGs as well as managing nasal cannulas, oxygen face masks, and tracheostomy care.
  • Certifications required: BLS and ACLS.

Preferred Skills and Certifications

  • NIHSS certification.
  • Understanding of IV insulin protocols.
  • Pre/Post hemodialysis management experience.
  • Ability to access ports and perform central line blood draws.
  • Experience starting IVs; familiarity with CVA, spinal cord injuries, traumatic brain injury, orthopedic trauma, and total joint replacements.
  • Wound care experience, including the use of wound vacs.

Job Details

  • Target Ratios: 1:6 for MS/Tele or 1:4 for PCU level patients.
  • Shift: Night shifts available, with options for 36 or 48 hours per week.
  • Maximum RTO: 7 days.
  • Floating required to ED and MedSurg areas as needed.
  • Every other weekend is mandatory.
  • Contract staff may be assigned to emergency response teams during catastrophic events or disasters.

Patient Demographics

All patients are adults with various medical and surgical diagnoses.

Unit Information

The unit focuses on inpatient holding in the Emergency Department (EDIP), utilizing standard equipment including cardiac monitors and IV pumps.

System Utilization

Documentation and communication will utilize tools such as Pyxis, Epic, and SBAR.

Orientation and Attire

  • Unit Orientation: 12 hours.
  • Scrubs: Navy.

Additional Information

Candidates will be required to pass EKG testing before starting in this specialty. Due to the nature of the unit, a high turnover rate is expected, and interviews will be conducted for all candidates.
