Description:
This position is for a Registered Nurse with a specialty in MedSurg/Tele.
The facility has 637 licensed beds and is a Level 1 Trauma center and teaching hospital.
The unit has 35 beds, with a census of approximately 35 patients.
Common patient diagnoses include acute or chronic diseases, post-operative surgeries, and co-morbidities such as diabetes, hypertension, infections, congestive heart failure, and electrolyte imbalances.
Patient ratios are typically RN to patient ratio of 1:4-6 and LPN to patient ratio of 1:4-6.
The unit is supported by Certified Nursing Assistants who assist with vital signs, glucose checks, patient hygiene, feeding, ambulation, and various transport needs.
Unit secretaries assist during peak hours, and charge nurses may have patient assignments as well.
Phlebotomy is conducted by most nursing staff or designated lab personnel.
The unit has a resource nurse and offers 24/7 respiratory therapy and hospitalist coverage.
Technicians monitor telemetry centrally.
Skills required include trach care, chest tube management, peripheral IV starts, insulin drips, heparin drips, strong clinical assessments, IV insertion and care, central line management, wound care, and post-operative monitoring.
Cardiac monitoring and telemetry interpretation, care coordination with interdisciplinary teams, discharge planning, and patient education management are also essential parts of the role.
The facility utilizes electronic medical records, and key technology includes vital sign monitors, glucose stat strips, and various monitoring and dispensing equipment.
The work environment is described as busy but emphasizes teamwork.
Floating requirements include working in all adult med-surg/telemetry units within the facility.
