Description:
RN position in a Medical Surgical / Telemetry unit.
The facility has 885 licensed beds and is designated as a Level 1 Trauma center.
It serves as a teaching hospital and includes a chest pain and stroke center.
The unit consists of 8 beds with an average daily census of 8 patients.
The patient population includes general medical cases with some cardiac, pneumonia, UTI, chest pain, and fluid overload.
The typical patient ratio is 1 RN to 4 patients and 1 CNA to 8 patients.
Support is provided by CNAs for vital signs and blood glucose checks, as well as hourly safety rounds and assistance with activities of daily living.
A charge nurse floats for the majority of the shift but may have a full assignment occasionally.
Peripheral blood draws are performed by nursing staff as there is no phlebotomy team.
RNs are responsible for interpreting telemetry strips during their shifts.
There is 24/7 availability of respiratory therapy and hospitalist services.
Telemetry monitors are present on the unit, but there are no monitors in individual rooms.
The electronic medical record system is utilized along with IV pumps and automated medication dispensing.
The unit culture is friendly, reflecting the supportive environment of an academic medical center.
