Job Title: Registered Nurse Profession: RN (Registered Nurse) Specialty: Medical Surgical Ortho Trauma Duration: 13 weeks Shift: 12 Hour Nights Hours per Shift: 12 hours Experience: Minimum of 2 years License: Required Certifications: BLS required, ACLS preferred Must-Have: Driver's license required, ability to pass a skills exam during orientation Description: The unit cares for patients with medical surgical and orthopedic trauma diagnoses. Common diagnoses include joint replacements, fractures, COPD exacerbation, and sepsis. The nurse-to-patient ratio is 1:5-6. Nurses are required to titrate heparin, lidocaine, and ketamine drips. PCA pumps are commonly used. A charge nurse is present on each shift and takes an assignment. Patient care techs and nurse aides are available on the unit, with a typical ratio of 1:10-20. Telemonitor techs will interpret strips, but nurses should have tele awareness. Shifts are typically scheduled from 0630-1900 and 1830-0700. Travelers will be scheduled, with some block scheduling approved. Weekend requirements typically include every other weekend, with schedules posted 6 weeks in advance. Holiday coverage is required for 2-3 holidays from Thanksgiving to New Year. Floating may be required to other medical surgical areas. Dress code for nurses is navy blue scrubs. Orientation consists of 2 days specific to the unit. The unit focuses on hourly rounding and responsiveness. Successful nurses demonstrate good attendance, teamwork, and compassion for patients. The unit serves a diverse patient population, including those from various cultural backgrounds. RTO requests need to be made upfront, with no additional requests approved post submission. Clients can cancel up to 4 shifts per assignment. Charting is done using EPIC.
