Med-Surg Colorectal Unit – Unit 5 South

Staffing & Nurse-Patient Ratios

  • Nurse-to-Patient Ratios:
    • 7:00 AM shift: 1:5
    • 7:00 PM shift: 1:6
  • LPNs: Utilized during the 7:00 AM shift
  • Charge Nurse:
    • Present on each shift
    • Typically takes an assignment
    • Sometimes the charge nurse is included in staffing without an assignment being the goal
  • Nurse Aides/PCTs:
    • Ratio: 12–15 patients per PCT
    • Duties include:
      • Taking vital signs
      • Bathing
      • Blood glucose monitoring
      • Phlebotomy
      • Assisting with activities of daily living (ADLs)

Certifications & Required Skills

  • Required Certifications:
    • BLS
    • ACLS
  • Medical/surgical nursing experience is essential.
  • RNs are required to titrate drips, including:
    • Amiodarone (Amio)
    • Heparin (Hep)
    • Insulin
    • Cardizem

Patient Types & Common Diagnoses

  • The unit primarily cares for patients with colorectal conditions, including:
    • Colorectal cancer
    • Ileus
    • Patients recovering from associated surgical interventions
  • Other common diagnoses include:
    • Osteomyelitis
    • Sepsis
    • Pneumonia

Equipment & Monitoring

  • Respiratory Therapy Equipment:
    • High Flow
    • BiPAP devices used for less than 24 hours
  • RNs are expected to troubleshoot these devices, but no further detailed responsibilities are specified.
  • Telemetry:
    • GE tele monitors
    • Virtual monitoring only
    • No telemetry/monitor technicians on site
    • Nurses are responsible for reading their own EKG strips each shift

Scheduling & Work Requirements

  • Scheduling:
    • Self-scheduling is allowed.
    • Block scheduling is allowed.
  • Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend or less frequently
  • Holidays: Assigned on a rotating basis
  • Floating: Required to other units

Orientation & Dress Code

  • Unit/Department-Specific Orientation: 3 shifts
  • Scrub Color: Navy blue
