Registered Nurse (RN) - Med Surg - Oncology

Job Overview

We are seeking a dedicated and experienced Registered Nurse (RN) to join our Medical Surgical Oncology unit. The ideal candidate will provide high-quality nursing care to patients requiring specialized medical treatment, particularly in hematology and oncology.

Unit Information

The Med Surg Oncology unit consists of:

• 6S: 16 inpatient oncology beds
• 7S: 12 inpatient oncology beds, with a focus on hematology and bone marrow transplant

The unit is currently in the process of expanding with the addition of more beds.

Responsibilities

The Registered Nurse will be responsible for:

• Caring for medically complex hematology/oncology patients
• Administering blood products and antibiotics, and managing symptoms and side effects
• Performing comprehensive head-to-toe assessments
• Administering medications as prescribed
• Communicating effectively with the interdisciplinary team (IDT) and updating patients and their families
• Possibly administering chemotherapy if properly trained

Qualifications

• Minimum of 2 years recent nursing experience in a large hospital setting (250+ beds)
• Experience in a busy level 1 trauma center is preferred
• Active Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association (AHA)
• A current North Dakota or compact RN license, or willingness to obtain
• Experience with EPIC systems required
• Willingness to float to all medical-surgical units within the region as needed
• Travel nursing experience is highly preferred

Work Schedule

The position involves:

• 12-hour shifts on a rotating day/night schedule
• Every other weekend and holiday availability
• No on-call duty required

Nurse to Patient Ratio

The nurse to patient ratio ranges as follows:

• 1:3 for patients receiving chemotherapy or bone marrow transplant
• 1:4-5 for regular oncology patients
• 1:4-6 on night shifts

Training and Orientation

New nurses will undergo an orientation program, including:

• 8 hours of classroom training
• 24-36 hours of unit-specific training

Dress Code

The uniform for this position consists of navy blue scrubs.
