Med Surg RN – OSF HealthCare
Department: Medical-Surgical

Shift: 12-hour shifts
Schedule: 0700–1930 / 1900–0730
Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend
Position Overview
OSF HealthCare is seeking an experienced Medical-Surgical Registered Nurse (RN) to provide care for acute medical and surgical patients. The units include 2 South with 18 beds and 3 South with 22 beds.
The ideal candidate has strong medical-surgical experience, excellent teamwork and communication skills, and preferably previous travel nursing experience.
Unit & Patient Information
- 2 South: 18 beds
- 3 South: 22 beds

- Patient population includes:
- Pneumonia
- Heart failure
- Sepsis
- COPD
- Urologic conditions
- Surgical patients
- Total joint patients
- General surgery
- Occasional pediatric respiratory illness
Required Qualifications
- At least 2 years of experience preferred
- Previous travel nursing experience preferred
- Strong medical-surgical nursing experience
- Excellent teamwork and communication skills
- Ability to collaborate effectively with Patient Care Technicians (PCTs)
Required Certifications
- BLS – Required
- ACLS – Required
- PALS – Preferred
Clinical Responsibilities
- Provide comprehensive nursing care to acute medical and surgical patients.
- Monitor and assess patients and communicate changes in condition.
- Develop and follow individualized plans of care.
- Collaborate closely with PCTs to ensure patient care needs are completed.
- Participate in PCT nursing-care touchpoints approximately 3 times per day, with emphasis on:
- Foley care
- CHG bathing
- Oral care
- Overall plan of care
- RNs are not required to titrate drips.
- Monitor telemetry and interpret telemetry strips.
- Manage patients utilizing BiPAP (stable/home-regimen patients) and high-flow oxygen as appropriate.
Telemetry & Respiratory Support
- Virtual central telemetry monitoring is available.
- RNs are responsible for monitoring telemetry strips.
- Telemetry system: Philips
- Respiratory support may include:
- BiPAP for stable patients on a home regimen
- High-flow oxygen
Staffing & Leadership
- Charge Nurse and Administrative Supervisor are available.
- Charge Nurse takes an assignment of approximately 1–2 patients.
- PCT staffing:
- Days: 1:8–10
- Evenings: 1:9–10
- Nights: 1:10–12
Schedule & Holidays
Shifts:
- Days: 0700–1930
- Nights: 1900–0730
Weekends:
Holiday rotation applies.
Day-shift holidays:
- Memorial Day
- July 4th
- Labor Day
- Thanksgiving
- Christmas
- New Year's Day
Night-shift holidays:
- Memorial Day Eve
- July 3rd

Floating Requirements
RNs may be required to float based on staffing needs.
- May float to ICU for general acute overflow patients.
- May float to the Ottawa Campus, approximately 25 miles from Peru, to support staffing needs.
- If floating to the Ottawa Campus, the nurse will be notified at least 2 hours before the start of the shift.
Low Census
In the event of low census, staff may be given a 4-hour low-census period, with the situation reevaluated every 4 hours.

Orientation
- Unit/department-specific orientation is typically 3 shifts.
OSF Assignment Information
Local Rate
Clinicians with a permanent address within 50 miles are subject to a $25 reduction to regular and overtime bill rates.
Call-Off Policy
OSF allows the equivalent of 12 hours per 13-week assignment to be called off without penalty or requiring payment for the shift.
Orientation
- 12 orientation hours are non-billable.
- Guaranteed hours do not apply during orientation.

- Last four (4) digits of the clinician's SSN
- Clinician's middle initial
- Requested time off
- Active Illinois license or confirmation that the Illinois license application process has been initiated
- Confirmation that the candidate understands OSF is a Drug-Free Campus
- Candidate must be able to produce a negative drug screen for all required panels

The ideal candidate is an experienced Med Surg RN who is comfortable caring for a diverse acute-care population, working with PCTs, monitoring telemetry, and adapting to floating requirements. Strong communication, teamwork, clinical judgment, and flexibility are essential for success in this role.
