RN Med/Surg Neuro – 12-Hour Nights

Department: Med/Surg Neuro – 4th Floor North
Setting: Acute Care, Level I Trauma Center
Shift: 12-hour nights, 6:30 PM–7:00 AM
EMR: Epic
BSN Required: No
License to Submit: Yes

Key Submission Rules

  • 50-mile radius rule
  • Driver’s license required at submission and used to verify radius
  • Candidate cannot currently or previously have worked full-time, part-time, or PRN with CommonSpirit, CHI, or Dignity
  • No license or background hits
  • Travel experience preferred, but strong first-time travelers may be considered

Required Certifications

  • AHA BLS
  • NIHSS

Unit

  • 25 beds
  • Typical RN ratio: 1:5–6
  • PCT/CNA ratio: approximately 1:10–20
  • Charge RN available on each shift and may take an assignment

Med/Surg Neuro patients include:

  • Stroke
  • Stable neurological deficits
  • Post-neurosurgery patients
  • Joint replacements
  • Fractures
  • Ortho trauma
  • Colon resections
  • COPD exacerbations
  • Prostatectomy
  • Cellulitis
  • Sepsis
  • GI bleeds
  • Pneumonia
  • Failure to thrive
  • Other Med/Surg Tele overflow

Drips / Skills

RNs may manage:

  • Heparin
  • Lidocaine
  • Ketamine
  • PCA pumps

Telemetry technicians interpret rhythms, but RNs should have basic telemetry awareness.

Floating

Travelers may float to:

  • Other Med/Surg units
  • Areas holding Med/Surg patients awaiting an inpatient bed

Scheduling

  • Nights: 6:30 PM–7:00 AM
  • Travelers are scheduled by the facility
  • Limited block scheduling may be approved
  • At least every other weekend
  • Additional weekend shifts may be required based on census
  • 2–3 holidays between Thanksgiving and New Year’s

Orientation

  • 2 days unit-specific orientation
  • RNs must complete a Pass/Fail exam on Friday of orientation
  • Exam is open book
  • Resources are provided
  • 90% minimum passing score
  • Failure to pass results in termination of the assignment
