Position Overview

Asante Rogue Regional Medical Center is seeking an experienced Registered Nurse – MedSurg Float Pool to support multiple inpatient units throughout the hospital.

The RN will float across a variety of medical-surgical and specialty areas based on hospital staffing needs. Candidates should have strong general medical-surgical knowledge and be comfortable adapting to different patient populations, workflows and nurse-to-patient ratios.

2 years of Medical-Surgical experience is preferred, although strong candidates with less than 2 years of MS experience may be considered.

Float Pool Coverage

The MedSurg Float Pool may support:

  • General Medicine
  • Cardiology
  • Medical-Surgical units
  • ED Boarding
  • Post-Surgical units
  • Orthopedic/Neurological units
  • Heart Center
  • Inpatient Rehabilitation
  • Behavioral Health – modified assignments
  • Medical Oncology

Chemotherapy administration is not required.

Travel RNs will receive education during onboarding regarding which patient assignments they may and may not accept. Certain specialized assignments may be reserved for Asante core staff.

Required Qualifications

  • Active RN license
  • BLS – Required
  • 2+ years of MedSurg experience – Preferred
  • Strong general Medical-Surgical nursing knowledge
  • Experience with:
    • Chest tubes
    • Central lines
    • Heparin infusions
  • Ability to care for a diverse inpatient population
  • Ability to adapt quickly while floating between units
  • EPIC experience – Preferred

Candidates do not need experience in every unit within the float pool; however, broader MedSurg experience is highly preferred.

Patient Population

Common diagnoses and patient populations include:

  • General Medicine
  • Medical-Surgical
  • Cardiology
  • Orthopedic/Neurological conditions
  • Post-surgical patients
  • Inpatient rehabilitation
  • Behavioral health patients with modified assignments
  • Medical oncology patients
  • ED boarding patients

Common Medications & Drips

Travel RNs should be comfortable with common inpatient drips, including:

  • Heparin – titratable
  • Amiodarone – set rate
  • Cardizem – set rate

Staffing & Support

  • Charge Nurses are available on the units
  • CNAs/PCTs are available
  • Typical CNA ratio: approximately 1:5–1:8
  • CNA responsibilities are assigned by the individual unit and RN
  • Telemetry is centrally monitored by dedicated Tele Techs
  • RNs are not required to independently interpret telemetry strips, although this skill is encouraged

Respiratory Support

Medical-Surgical patients may use:

  • CPAP
  • Home CPAP

BiPAP use on the MedSurg units is uncommon.

Scheduling

Important: Asante does not accommodate scheduling requests for travelers.

  • Travelers are utilized to fill staffing gaps
  • No block scheduling
  • Schedule is determined according to hospital staffing needs
  • Travelers must maintain flexibility
  • Weekends are required
  • Travelers are expected to work holidays as needed
  • 2 of the 3 winter holidays are expected

Daily Unit Assignment

Travel RNs call the Staffing Office at the beginning of each shift to receive their unit assignment.

Assignments may vary from shift to shift based on hospital needs.

Standby Requirement

If the RN is not needed due to staffing levels, the traveler may be placed on standby.

A traveler on standby may be called in at any time during the scheduled shift if staffing needs change.

Orientation

2 × 12-hour shifts of department/unit-specific orientation.

Additionally, the first work week includes 12 hours of non-billable orientation.

Guaranteed hours do not apply during orientation.

Important Assignment Policies

Local Candidate Restriction

Asante does not accept local candidates and maintains a 50-mile radius restriction.

Call-Off Policy

The facility may call off or cancel up to 24 hours during the 13-week assignment.

Licensure

Non-Oregon licensed RNs may be eligible for a 90-day temporary Oregon license if their permanent Oregon license is not posted before the assignment start date.

Dress Code

  • Scrubs required
  • Any scrub color is acceptable
  • Tattoos above the shoulders may not be visible
  • Facial piercings are restricted to a nose stud
