Position Overview
We are seeking an experienced Registered Nurse (RN) to join a busy General Surgery/Medical-Surgical unit caring for a diverse adult patient population. The unit has 38 beds and can accommodate up to 42 patients with semi-private rooms.
The ideal candidate will have at least 2 years of nursing experience and recent Epic experience within the past 2 years. Strong assessment, clinical judgment, and the ability to recognize and respond appropriately to critical cardiac rhythms are essential.
Unit Details
- Bed Capacity: 38 beds, expandable to 42
- RN-to-Patient Ratio: 1:4–5 on both days and nights
- Patient Population: Diverse surgical and medical patients
- EMR: Epic
- Monitor Techs: Available
- PCA Support: Approximately 1:8–15 depending on staffing
- PCAs are trained in phlebotomy.
- Charge Nurse available outside of the staffing assignment.
Patient Population & Common Diagnoses
The unit cares for a wide range of surgical and medical patients, including:
- General surgery patients
- Appendectomies
- Orthopedic fractures
- GI conditions
- Gynecological patients
- Vascular patients
- Other post-operative and Medical/Surgical conditions
Key Responsibilities
- Provide comprehensive nursing care to General Surgery and Med/Surg patients.
- Perform patient assessments and ongoing reassessments.
- Administer medications and treatments according to physician orders and facility protocols.
- Manage IV therapy and monitor patient responses to treatment.
- Manage Heparin according to protocol.
- Monitor patients using telemetry and recognize potentially lethal cardiac rhythms.
- Respond appropriately to changes in cardiac rhythm and patient condition.
- Collaborate with physicians, PCAs, respiratory therapists, and other healthcare professionals.
- Provide patient education and discharge support.
- Accurately document care in Epic.
- Maintain safe, organized, and efficient patient care in a high-volume environment.
Required Experience
- Minimum 2 years of RN experience – Required
- Recent Epic experience within the past 2 years – Required
- Strong Medical/Surgical and/or General Surgery experience preferred
- Ability to recognize lethal cardiac rhythms and respond appropriately
- Experience caring for post-operative and medically complex patients
Required Certifications
- BLS – Required
- NIHSS – Required
Telemetry
- Telemetry monitoring is utilized on the unit.
- Dedicated monitor technicians are available.
- RNs are not required to formally interpret strips, but must be able to recognize lethal rhythms and respond appropriately.

Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend
Holiday Requirement: None specified
Call: No scheduled call requirement.
Travelers may be placed on standby if scheduled for a shift but their services are not required.
Floating Requirements
Travelers are first to float based on hospital staffing needs.
Potential floating locations include:
- Other surgical units
- Other Medical/Surgical units
- COVID Medical unit, where team nursing may occasionally be required
- Emergency Department for patient holds
The facility may house approximately 20–30 Med/Surg patients in the ED daily, so ED holds may be part of the floating assignment.
Orientation
3 days total:
- Day 1: General hospital orientation
- Day 2: General Surgery unit orientation
- Day 3: Orthopedic Spine unit orientation
Important License/Background Requirement
Travelers with known license hits related to medication diversion or endangerment should not be submitted.
Any such licensing findings may result in immediate contract cancellation.
