Labor and Delivery Nurse
About the Role
We are seeking a skilled Labor and Delivery Nurse to join our team. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in labor and delivery, with the ability to provide high-quality care to patients during and after childbirth.
Unit Information
- 9 Labor and Delivery Rooms (LDR)
- 2 OB Operating Rooms (OR)
- 2 OB Post Anesthesia Care Units (PACU)
- 11 Level II Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) beds
- 4 Pediatric beds
- 20 Mother/Baby unit beds
- 18-bed START unit for Perinatal Addiction
- 3 OB Emergency Department beds (20 weeks and above)
Patient Types/Common Diagnoses
- Level II Perinatal Center for patients 32 weeks and above
- Common conditions: Hypertension, magnesium administration, substance abuse medication management
- High incidence of low-risk patients requiring intermittent monitoring
- Epidurals, fetal monitoring, and IV management
- Antepartum care for continued fetal monitoring
- Stable patients and babies will transfer to the Mother/Baby unit post-labor
- 175-200 deliveries per month
Patient Ratios
- 1:1 ratio for active labor
- 1:2 ratio for non-active laboring patients
Required Qualifications
- BLS certification
- NRP certification
- Fetal monitoring certification (AWHONN or Relia's module)
- Minimum of 1 year of Labor and Delivery experience
- First-time travelers are welcome
Skills Required
- Proficient in performing cervical exams, antepartum and labor care
- Experience with amnioinfusion, epidurals, and fetal monitoring
- Capable of IV administration and Pitocin management
- Postpartum care for both mother and baby in the first 24 hours
- Comfortable with couplet care once patients are stable
- Experience with HUGS Security system and Pyxis medication dispensing
Support Availability
- No CNAs on the unit
- Surgery Techs available Monday through Friday
- Phlebotomy services available
- NICU attendance for patients less than 34 weeks, if necessary
- Respiratory Therapy available 24/7 for high-risk deliveries
- Hospitalist services provided 24/7
- Access to OB Group and Laborist (OBGYN) 24/7
- Midwifery and Family Practice support
Technology/Equipment
- Electronic Medical Records: EPIC Stork, GE Centricity
- IV Pumps: Alaris
- Medication Dispensing: Pyxis
Orientation and Scheduling
- Comprehensive orientation including unit-specific and annual core competencies
- Two shifts on the unit: Patient deliveries and C-sections/Triage
- Weekend rotation: Every other weekend
- Holiday expectations: One major holiday and one minor holiday
- Shift times: 0700-1900 or 1900-0700
- Schedule cycles created in three-week increments
