General Summary

The Night Nurse provides nursing care services consistent with the responsibilities of a Registered Nurse (RN) or Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN).

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

• Observe and report symptoms and conditions of residents.
• Administer medications as prescribed by the physician.
• Administer treatments as ordered.
• Count narcotics and maintain accurate records.
• Maintain records reflecting resident condition, medication, treatments, and progress.
• Transcribe physician written and telephone orders.
• Place drug orders.
• Assist with completion of nursing history, assessments, MDS, and care plans.
• Participate in the orientation and supervision of nursing staff.
• Perform direct resident care as necessary.
• Conform to recognized nursing practices and facility policies and procedures.
• Participate in ongoing in-service education.
• Assume Charge Nurse Responsibilities when necessary.
• Prepare and coordinate CNA assignments.
• Contact physicians as needed to book tests, labs, x-rays, and medical appointments.
• Assist physicians during rounds and prepare charts for signatures.
• Ensure accuracy of meal trays.
• Directly supervise CNAs.
• Perform all required treatments and assessments.
• Conduct resident admissions and discharges.
• Notify physicians of any changes in resident status.
• Update family members/HCP on changes in treatment status.
• Document nursing notes and necessary records.
• Update care plans accordingly.

Physical Requirements

• Able to lift up to fifty pounds.
• Able to push/pull forty pounds.
• Able to stand for up to four (4) hours per day.
• Able to bend, squat, and stoop to floor level.
• Able to kneel.
• Able to walk.
• Able to reach heights of up to four and one-half feet.
• Able to see and hear with or without prostheses.
• Able to move intermittently.
• Able to cope with physical and mental job stress.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Ability to recognize changes in the condition of residents and take the necessary actions.
• Proficiency in reading, writing, and speaking English in a legible and understandable manner.
• Current CPR/AED Certification.

Education

Must be licensed in the State of Massachusetts as a Registered Nurse (RN) or Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN). Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.
