This is a PASS/FAIL test. The unit consists of a total of 19 postpartum beds and 12 labor and delivery beds. There are 2 operating rooms and 1 post-anesthesia care unit. Ratios are compliant with regulations. The electronic medical record system is Cerner with Fetal Link for surveillance. Charge Nurse duties are managed by a Clinical Supervisor most days and a staff Team Lead. There is a Nurse Manager who works Monday through Friday. No nurse aides are present as OB techs handle scrubbing and desk coverage. There is a weekend requirement of 3 weekend shifts in a 4-week schedule. Shifts are 6:45 PM to 7:15 AM for both days and nights. Floating may involve pediatrics or taking care of feeders and growers in the NICU for those with prior experience. Floor-specific orientation requires 2 to 3 shifts depending on the ability to circulate. Common patient diagnoses may involve low and high-risk deliveries. The facility has a Level III NICU. Peak times occur in July and October. The hospital can cancel up to 4 shifts per 13-week assignment. There is no telemetry involved. Respiratory therapy is available 24/7, along with pharmacy services. Staff will follow California ratios for nursing care. Common types of patients include those requiring immediate surgery for congenital defects.
