The Labor and Delivery Nurse is responsible for planning and providing nursing care to patients and their families during antepartum, intrapartum, and postpartum periods. This includes managing emergency situations and assisting in C-Sections. The nurse supervises and delegates care responsibilities to ancillary personnel according to their scope of practice. The role requires performing physical and psychosocial assessments while considering age and cultural differences. The nurse initiates a multidisciplinary, goal-oriented care plan in collaboration with healthcare team members. Clinical judgment is crucial in managing perinatal emergencies, including crash C-sections, precipitous deliveries, and shoulder dystocia. Competence in assessing amniotic fluid status, vaginal bleeding, and recognizing and managing abnormalities is essential. The nurse effectively manages pain control in the laboring patient and supports alternative pain control methods. Assistance with epidural catheter placement and monitoring patient status during procedures is required. Patient education during all stages of the perinatal and postpartum periods is also a key responsibility. Accurate and timely documentation of all nursing care provided is necessary, along with consistent performance of unit-specific safety and quality checks.
