Care is provided during the antepartum, intrapartum, and postpartum periods. This includes emergency situations and circulating for C-Sections. Supervision and delegation of care responsibilities to ancillary personnel is required. The role entails performing physical and psychosocial assessments of patients. Demonstrating knowledge and consideration of age and cultural differences is essential. A multidisciplinary, goal-oriented care plan is initiated for each patient. Collaboration with members of the healthcare team is vital. Clinical judgment in managing perinatal emergencies must be demonstrated. Competence in assessing fetal and maternal well-being is essential. Assessment of amniotic fluid status and recognition and management of abnormalities is required. The nurse effectively manages pain control in the laboring patient. Alternative pain control methods are supported and implemented when appropriate. Competence in assisting with epidural catheter placement and monitoring status during and after is necessary. Patient and family education is provided during all stages of perinatal and postpartum periods. Methods appropriate to age, condition, culture, and learning readiness are utilized. Timely and accurate documentation of all nursing care provided is expected. Evaluation of the patient's response to medications, treatments, and procedures must be completed. Necessary unit-specific safety and quality control checks are consistently performed. Other job-related duties may be assigned.
