Job Title: Registered Nurse - Labor and Delivery Profession: Nursing Specialty: Labor and Delivery Duration: 15 weeks Shift: Night Shift Hours per Shift: 12 hours Experience: Minimum of 2 years in Labor and Delivery License: Active Illinois nursing license or confirmation that application process has been initiated Certifications: BLS, NRP, ACLS, Advanced AWHONN Electronic Fetal Monitoring Must-Have: Must have a minimum of 2 years of experience in Labor and Delivery. Must have completed Advanced AWHONN Electronic Fetal Monitoring class. Must be proficient in care of high-risk obstetric patients. Must be able to care for magnesium and insulin drips. Must be able to circulate a cesarean section in the operating room and recover patients in the PACU. Must be proficient in baby care at both vaginal and cesarean deliveries. Must have ACLS and NRP certifications. Description: Registered Nurses in Labor and Delivery provide care to pregnant patients and high-risk pregnant patients. Nurses will manage vaginal deliveries and cesarean deliveries along with cerclage placements. The unit follows AWHONN guidelines for nurse-to-patient ratios. A nurse will care for one patient during Pitocin induction and active labor. During vaginal delivery and cesarean section, a nurse will care for two patients. In the PACU, the nurse will have one-to-one care. In triage, the nurse will care for three patients. The unit consists of 9 labor, delivery, recovery rooms, 6 triage rooms, and 36 postpartum beds. The average daily adult census is 18, while the infant census is 14. The staffing includes charge nurses and PCTs for support. Labor hospitalists are available 24/7. Electronic fetal monitoring is utilized, and nurses are required to hold advanced certification. RNs are expected to troubleshoot respiratory equipment, but no ventilatory support is required in the unit. Float requirements include working in the postpartum and antepartum units. On the postpartum unit, nurses will take care of 5-6 patients. On the antepartum unit, RNs will care for 3 high-risk, intermittently monitored patients. RNs are required to attend scheduled shifts on weekends and every other holiday. Duties include following established protocols and providing high-quality patient care.
