24 hrs listed, but unit says typically 4–6 shifts

Unit Breakdown

This is a fairly high-volume L&D unit.

  • 10 L&D beds
  • 2 ORs for C-sections
  • 4 triage beds
  • 10 postpartum beds
  • Approximately 120 births/month
  • Labor patients 32 weeks and up
  • Elective and medical inductions
  • Stable antepartum
  • Postpartum
  • Well newborns

Ratios

They follow AWHONN standards:

  • L&D: Primarily 1:1
  • Postpartum:1:6 couple care

The 1:1 L&D ratio is a very good selling point.

What They REALLY Need

This isn't a job I'd send to a nurse who only has basic L&D experience.

Required experience:

✅ L&D
✅ Postpartum
C-section circulating
✅ Triage strongly preferred
✅ Drip titration
✅ Fetal monitoring

The traveler will be expected to circulate C-sections in the two ORs.

Drips

RNs titrate:

  • Pitocin — primarily
  • Magnesium
  • Insulin — rarely

So I'd specifically ask whether the candidate has recent magnesium and Pitocin titration experience.

Certifications — ALL Required

This is a fairly heavy certification requirement:

  • BLS
  • ACLS
  • NRP
  • STABLE — must have taken it at least once
  • AWHONN Intermediate or Advanced Fetal Monitoring

That last one is particularly important because it is explicitly required.

‍⚕️ Staffing / Support

This is actually one of the stronger parts of the assignment.

Every shift has:

  • Charge RN
  • Resource RN
  • House Supervisor

And importantly:

Charge RN and Resource RN do NOT have patient assignments.

That's a significant positive for a traveler.

There's also:

  • CNA support 4–5 days/nights per week
  • Unit clerk 24/7

OB coverage

Very strong:

  • OB hospitalist 24/7
  • Midwives always on call
  • Neonatal NP 24/7
  • Neonatologist available within 15 minutes
  • CRNA 24/7

For L&D, that's a very attractive support structure.

️ Equipment / Documentation

EMR: Epic

EFM: GE Connect

No monitor techs — the RN will need to be comfortable interpreting fetal strips independently.

FLOATING — BIGGEST CATCH

This is probably the biggest thing I'd disclose upfront.

Traveler is first to float.

They can be floated to:

  • Nampa L&D
  • Boise L&D
  • Sitter in Med/Surg
  • Sitter in ED

The three L&D locations are reportedly within about 20 minutes of each other.

They say true floating to another location is rare, but it can happen.

So I would not pitch this as "no floating."

I'd say:

"You're first to float, but it's primarily to like-unit L&D locations within the valley. They can also use you as a sitter in MS/ED if needed."

That's much more transparent.

️ Schedule

7p–7a nights

Hospital policy says nurses cannot work more than 5 shifts consecutively.

They'll try to accommodate traveler schedule requests, but there's no formal self-scheduling language here.

Weekend requirements are unit needs, rather than a fixed EOW requirement.

Same with holidays.

No call

This is a major positive:

No call or standby requirement.

Scrubs

Blue scrubs provided by the unit.

Nice little selling point — one less thing for the traveler to worry about.

❌ Potential Hard Stops

I'd screen these BEFORE submitting:

  1. Does she/he have L&D + PP experience?
  2. Has the nurse circulated C-sections recently?
  3. Triage experience?
  4. ACLS?
  5. NRP?
  6. STABLE?
  7. AWHONN Intermediate/Advanced Fetal Monitoring?
  8. Comfortable titrating Pitocin/Mag?
  9. Comfortable being first to float?
  10. Comfortable potentially floating to Nampa/Boise L&D?
  11. Comfortable with 48-hour guarantee?
  12. Idaho license in hand?

Traveler Appeal

9/10

Biggest Selling Points

1. 48-hour guarantee
That's probably your strongest selling point.

2. No call
Especially attractive to L&D nurses.

3. 1:1 L&D ratios

4. Strong OB support
24/7 OB hospitalist + 24/7 CRNA + neonatal NP.

5. Epic

6. Busy unit
~120 births/month means a traveler should get good L&D volume.

7. Dedicated charge/resource RN
Neither carries an assignment.

⚠️ Biggest Objections

#1 — First to float

This is the biggest one.

#2 — Heavy certification requirements

STABLE + NRP + ACLS + AWHONN fetal monitoring is a lot.

#3 — C-section circulating is mandatory

A pure bedside L&D nurse without OR/circulator experience isn't a good fit.

#4 — 48-hour guarantee may mean a demanding schedule

A nurse looking for an easy 36-hour contract probably won't love this.

A Recruiter Who Works For You My name is Sean, and I’m a U.S.-based travel nurse recruiter here in Denver, Colorado. I’ve been recruiting nurses for 10+ years, and one thing I’ve always believed in is that communication, transparency, and honesty are what make a great recruiter-nurse relationship. One thing I want nurses to know about Vivian: when you apply to jobs, you may be giving recruiters consent to submit you—even if you never actually speak with them. That’s not how I work. I will never submit one of my nurses without written or verbal consent. If you apply to one of my jobs, I want to make sure you know: • Where you are being submitted • The pay breakdown • The complete job details • What the facility is like, when I have previous experience or knowledge of it • What to expect during the interview process My job isn’t just to submit you and hope for the best. My job is to work for you, make sure you’re prepared, and help you land the right assignment. I’ll always give you the good, the bad, and the ugly about a job when I know it. I’d rather be upfront with you than tell you what you want to hear just to get a submission. If you’re looking for a recruiter who values communication, transparency, honesty, and actually picking up the phone, I’d love the opportunity to work with you. Feel free to apply to any of my jobs and send me a message. If you have questions about a position or don’t have a complete profile yet, just reach out. I’m happy to help. Also, if you have specific states or areas you’re targeting, let me know. I recruit nationwide and can help you find opportunities that fit what you’re looking for. 10+ years recruiting. One goal: Get my nurses the right job.
