Interventional Radiology/Cardiology Registered Nurse (RN)

The Interventional Radiology/Cardiology RN provides specialized nursing care to patients undergoing invasive interventional procedures including angiography, embolization, cardiac catheterization, and other minimally invasive interventions. This role collaborates with physicians and the interdisciplinary team to ensure safe, efficient, and high-quality patient care, while acting as a patient advocate and supervising any assigned personnel.

Essential Job Functions

  • Nursing/Circulator Role:
    • Administer medications as ordered, including anticoagulants, vasoactive agents, contrast, and emergency drugs.
    • Maintain sterile technique and assist with procedures as needed.
    • Recognize and respond rapidly to complications such as arrhythmia, bleeding, reactions to contrast, and cardiac arrest.
  • Contrast Allergy Management Collaboration:
    • Work collaboratively with Radiologic Technologists and physicians to identify and address contrast allergies or sensitivities.
    • Participate in pre-procedure discussions regarding appropriate contrast agents and ensure allergy considerations are communicated during the timeout.
  • Moderate Sedation Role:
    • Monitor patients for moderate sedation, ensuring continual assessment without engaging in other tasks.
    • Verify ASA classification and consult anesthesia for higher ASA scores.
    • Provide moderate sedation per protocol, monitoring vital signs, hemodynamics, and level of consciousness.
  • Scrub Role:
    • Function as the scrub technologist using sterile techniques to assist physicians during procedures.
    • Prepare and organize sterile instruments, guidewires, catheters, and procedural trays.
    • Anticipate physician needs during critical moments.
  • Monitor Role:
    • Serve as the primary monitor technologist, recording hemodynamic data and procedural events.
    • Operate and troubleshoot physiological monitoring systems.
    • Document all supplies used, implants, and procedural details accurately.
  • Support to the Team Peri-Procedure:
    • Assist with patient preparation and positioning, and verify clinical factors such as allergies and renal function.
    • Perform patient identification, procedure verification, and timeout processes according to policy.
  • Department Support:
    • Manage supplies and inventory, ensuring the availability and proper storage of devices and equipment.
    • Assist with post-procedure cleanup and prepare the room for subsequent cases.

Qualifications

  • Education:
    • Required: Graduate from an accredited nursing program; evidence of continuing education.
    • Desired: Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN).
  • Experience:
    • Required: At least one year of experience in critical care, emergency, cath lab, or interventional radiology.
    • Desired: At least three years in Interventional Radiology or Cath Lab; conscious sedation training; monitor role experience.
  • Licenses, Certifications, and Registrations:
    • Current RN license in the State of Oregon.
    • Current BLS and ACLS certification; certifications specific to areas of clinical specialty preferred (e.g., RCIS, NIH Stroke Scale).
  • Equipment/Tools/Work Aids:
    • Infusion pumps, PCA pumps, medical equipment, computers, and patient charts.
  • Specialized Knowledge and Skills:
    • Ability to provide age-specific, culturally competent, and holistic care.
