It also manages patients with strokes, including IV tPA, thrombectomy, embolization, and aneurysm coiling. The unit cares for complex burn patients including adults and pediatrics with 18-20% body surface area involved without respiratory complications. General medical and surgical patients requiring critical care are also treated. Nurse-to-patient ratios are 1:2-3. There is a charge nurse available 24/7, who ideally does not take patients, but may do so when necessary. Certified Nursing Assistants (CNAs) are available on staff to assist nurses. Clientists are present 24/7, and eICU support is available after hours for pulmonary cases. Respiratory therapy equipment such as vents, CPAP, BiPAP, and high flow are utilized, with RNs primarily troubleshooting. No monitor tech is available; nurses are expected to read and interpret EKG strips using central monitors on the unit. Twelve-hour shifts span from 7:00 AM to 7:30 PM and from 7:00 PM to 7:30 AM. Every other weekend and holiday shifts are required. RNs may be expected to float to other units as needed, with a capped patient ratio of 1:4 if floated to MedSurg.
