The nurse-to-patient ratio is 1:2-3. Common diagnoses include respiratory failure, post-surgical care, wound care, IV antibiotics, post-CVA, post-trauma, and cardiac patients. RNs are required to titrate various drips, including Precedex, Propofol, Fentanyl, Versed, Lasix, Insulin, Amiodarone, Nitro, Levophed, and Dopamine. There is a house supervisor available 24/7. Nurses provide primary care in the ICU setting. Clientists or intensivists are in-house during the day only. Telehealth support is available after hours. Respiratory therapy is available in-house 24/7. Nurses are expected to troubleshoot respiratory equipment. The unit is equipped with Phillips telemetry monitors that are centrally monitored. Shifts are designed as 12-hour shifts. Weekend and holiday rotations are required. ICU RNs may float to a medical-surgical unit if needed. Nurses are expected to wear scrubs and approved t-shirts. Orientation includes classroom training and shifts with a preceptor. The charting system used is EPIC. A BSN is not required for this position. The setting is within an acute care division.
