The facility is a Level 1 Trauma Center and Level III Perinatal Center. It has a Magnet Designation and is a Comprehensive Stroke Center. There are a total of 397 beds, with 17 dedicated ICU beds. The ICU has a patient ratio of 1:1-2 based on acuity, and the stepdown unit has a ratio of 1:3-4. Patient populations include those with multi-system organ failure, DKA, sepsis, COPD, CHF, COVID, pneumonia, AKI, CKD, and cardiac conditions. Experiences with ventilated and sedated patients are crucial. Responsibilities include managing trach, ventilator, BiPAP, chest tubes, and arterial lines. Experience with cardiovascular complications and titration of vasopressors, sedation, and analgesia is required. Experience with CRRT, insulin drips, wound vacs, balloon pumps, and impella devices is preferred. Support on the unit includes a CNA per unit and a charge nurse who sometimes takes patient assignments. RNs perform all phlebotomy draws, with assistance from respiratory therapy for arterial blood gas draws. An IV/VAT team is utilized for difficult IV placement, although night coverage may not have VAT support. A resource nurse and house supervisor are available 24/7, along with hospitalists, residents, and a rescue team. The charting system used is EPIC, and equipment includes Alaris IV pumps and monitors. RNs may float to other units and have a weekend rotation every other week. Holiday expectations include one summer and one winter holiday. Scrub color for RNs is navy. Techs wear teal scrubs.
