Chronic ventilators and chronic tracheostomy patients are common on the unit. The RN to patient ratio is typically 1:1 to 1:2, with the possibility of 1:3 in rare cases. Certified nursing assistants assist with vital signs, glucose checks, bathing, feeding, ambulating, turning, hourly rounding, and transportation of patients. There is a unit secretary available during key hours, with a house-wide call secretary during the night shift. The nursing team has access to respiratory therapists, hospitalists, and intensivists 24/7. Telemetry monitoring is managed by a central telemetry unit. The electronic medical record system used is EPIC, with various medical equipment available for patient care. The department maintains a collaborative and busy environment where teamwork is essential.
