Experience Requirements
A minimum of 3 years of experience in a critical care setting is required.
Certifications and Requirements
- Valid Basic Life Support (BLS) from the American Heart Association
- Valid Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) from the American Heart Association
- Valid professional license within the state of practice or nurse licensure compact
- Additional requirements for a compact license:
- Verification of suicide training
- Verification of demographic data via Nursys e-Notify
- Proof of right to work in the United States
Position Responsibilities
Critical Care Nurses (ICU/CCU) provide direct and individualized nursing care to patients using the application of scientific nursing principles. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Consulting and coordinating with the health care team to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate patient care plans
- Preparing and administering medications as prescribed and recording their administration, while reporting adverse reactions per nursing policy
- Giving basic bedside care to patients
- Initiating patient education plans as prescribed, including post-treatment care needs, diet and nutrition, exercise programs, self-administration of medication, and rehabilitation
- Recording patients' medical information and vital signs
- Ordering, interpreting, and evaluating diagnostic tests to assess patient conditions
- Taking samples for lab work and evaluating lab reports
- Preparing equipment and assisting physicians during examinations and treatments
- Responding to life-saving situations based on nursing standards and protocols
- Documenting all care information concisely, accurately, and promptly in the appropriate format
- Applying hemodynamic, phlebotomy, and IV protocols
- Monitoring and adjusting specialized equipment used on patients and interpreting electronic displays
- Monitoring catheters, leads, and tubing for proper placement and functioning
- Initiating corrective action based on information from monitoring/life support equipment when adverse symptoms arise
