ICU Registered Nurse (RN) – Travel Assignment
Position Overview
We are seeking an experienced ICU Registered Nurse (RN) to provide high-quality critical care to adult patients in a fast-paced intensive care environment. The ideal candidate will have strong critical-care experience, excellent clinical judgment, and demonstrated competency in managing complex medical, cardiac, respiratory, and neurological patients.
The ICU operates with a typical 1:2 RN-to-patient ratio and provides continuous critical-care support, including 24/7 E-ICU coverage.
Unit & Patient Population
- Department: Intensive Care Unit (ICU)
- Charting System:Epic
- ICU RN Ratio: 1:2
- Downgraded Medical Patients: 1:5
- PCU Patients: 1:4
- Telemetry: RNs are responsible for reading and interpreting cardiac rhythms
- Critical Care Coverage: 24/7
- E-ICU: Nurse and APRN coverage 24/7
Common Diagnoses & Patient Conditions
The ICU cares for a broad range of high-acuity adult patients, including:
- COPD
- Pneumonia
- CVA/Stroke
- TIA
- DKA
- Sepsis
- CHF
- STEMI
- Neurological conditions
- Complex medical and critical-care conditions
Key ICU Responsibilities
The ICU RN will be responsible for:
- Performing comprehensive assessments and continuous monitoring of critically ill patients.
- Developing, implementing, and evaluating individualized nursing care plans.
- Recognizing subtle changes in patient condition and promptly escalating concerns.
- Managing patients with complex medical, cardiac, respiratory, and neurological conditions.
- Administering medications, IV therapies, blood products, and other prescribed treatments.
- Titrating critical-care medications according to physician orders and facility protocols.
- Monitoring hemodynamic status and responding appropriately to changes in patient condition.
- Reading, interpreting, and documenting cardiac rhythms.
- Providing care to patients requiring mechanical ventilation and BiPAP.
- Troubleshooting respiratory equipment within the RN's scope of practice and collaborating with Respiratory Therapy.
- Maintaining accurate and timely documentation in Epic.
- Providing patient and family education as appropriate.
- Participating in interdisciplinary rounds and collaborating with physicians, APRNs, RTs, and other healthcare professionals.
- Maintaining infection prevention, patient safety, and evidence-based critical-care practices.
Drip & Medication Management
Titration of critical-care medications is required.
Common medications and therapies may include:
- Vasopressors
- Insulin infusions
- TNK
- Heparin
- IV antibiotics
- Sedatives
- Other critical-care medications as clinically indicated
Candidates must demonstrate confidence in managing high-acuity patients requiring continuous medication infusions and close monitoring.
Respiratory Support
The ICU manages patients requiring advanced respiratory support, including:
- Mechanical ventilation
- BiPAP
RNs are expected to understand respiratory support equipment, perform appropriate troubleshooting within their scope, and work collaboratively with Respiratory Therapy.
Staffing & Support
- Charge Nurse: Available each shift
- Nurse Aides/Patient Care Technicians: Available based on census
- 1 tech up to 20 patients
- 2 techs when census reaches approximately 24 patients
- Critical Care Coverage: Available 24/7
- E-ICU: Staffed by a nurse and APRN 24/7
Schedule
- Day Shift: 6:30 AM – 7:00 PM
- Night Shift: 6:30 PM – 7:00 AM
- Scheduling: Created by the unit scheduler
- Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend
- Holiday Requirement: Varies based on unit needs
- Block Scheduling: Subject to unit scheduling needs and cannot be guaranteed
Floating Requirements
Travelers may be required to float based on facility staffing needs.
Potential floating assignments include:
- PCU
- Medical-Surgical floors
When floating, the RN will be assigned patients appropriate to the unit and within the nurse's clinical scope.
Required Certifications & Qualifications
- BLS – Required
- ACLS – Required
- NIHSS – Required
- Recent and strong ICU/Critical Care RN experience
- Demonstrated experience with critical-care medication titration
- Competency with ventilated and BiPAP patients
- Ability to independently interpret cardiac rhythms
- Strong clinical assessment and critical-thinking skills
- Ability to function effectively in a high-acuity environment
Orientation & Competency Requirements
- System Orientation & Onboarding: First week
- Unit-Specific Orientation: 1–2 twelve-hour shifts
- RN Orientation Exam: Pass/Fail exam administered on Friday during orientation
- The exam is open book and covers skills and information presented during orientation.
- Candidates are provided with the necessary resources to successfully complete the exam.
- A minimum score of 90% is required to pass.
- Failure to achieve the required score may result in termination of the contract.
Important Submission Requirements
50-Mile Radius Rule
- A 50-mile radius rule applies.
- Candidate's driver's license must be provided at submission and will be used to determine whether the candidate is outside the 50-mile radius.
- Candidates must meet the facility's applicable radius requirements.
CommonSpirit Employment Restriction
Candidates may not currently be Full-Time, Part-Time, or PRN employees with any facility associated with CommonSpirit, including CHI and/or Dignity.
Time-Off / RTO Requirements
- RTO must be submitted upfront.
- For a 13-week contract, 7 or fewer days of RTO may be requested.
- Additional RTO will not be approved after submission.
- Candidates should disclose all scheduling requirements and requested time off before submission.
Dress Code & Compliance
- Scrub Color: Navy Blue
- Artificial Nails: Prohibited in all patient-care departments.
- Candidates must comply with the facility's fingernail policy. Refusal to remove prohibited artificial nails may result in contract termination.
