ICU Registered Nurse (RN) – Cardiothoracic ICU (CTICU) | Travel Nursing Contract in Chesapeake, Virginia
Join a high-acuity Cardio Thoracic ICU as a Travel ICU Registered Nurse in Chesapeake, Virginia. This 13-week travel nursing assignment offers the opportunity to care for adult cardiac and critically ill patients in a collaborative environment using a universal bed model, where ICU and step-down patients are cared for within the same unit. Chesapeake is located in Coastal Virginia, offering easy access to waterfront recreation, hiking trails, and nearby destinations including Virginia Beach and Norfolk.
Travel ICU RN Job Details
- Specialty: Cardio Thoracic ICU (CTICU) Registered Nurse
- Healthcare Setting: 8-bed adult CTICU with a universal bed model
- Weekly Estimated Pay: $2,020-$2,130
- Start Date: November 9, 2026
- Assignment End Date: February 8, 2027
- Contract Duration: 13 weeks, with possible extension
- Schedule: 3x12-hour or 4x12-hour shifts per week; 36-48 hours weekly
- Shift: Night shift, approximately 7:00 PM-7:30 AM
- Weekend and Holiday Coverage: Every other weekend, holidays, and two of the three winter holidays during the assignment
- Patient Population: Adults, including post-operative CABG, acute coronary syndrome, NSTEMI, STEMI, and CHF patients
- Typical Ratios: 1:1-2, including step-down patients
- Orientation: 24 hours
Cardiothoracic ICU Registered Nurse Requirements
- At least 2 years of recent CVICU or CTICU nursing experience
- Previous travel nursing experience preferred
- Active Virginia or Compact Registered Nurse license in hand at the time of submission
- Current BLS and ACLS certifications through the American Heart Association
- NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification
- Proficiency with Epic electronic medical records (EMR)
- Strong cardiac, critical care, neurological, dysrhythmia, and ventilator management experience
- Ability to care for both ICU and step-down patients in a universal bed model
- Must reside at least 50 miles from the assignment location to be eligible for this travel nursing contract
- Must be able to meet required fit-testing and cardiac rhythm assessment standards
- Requested time off must be submitted for review with the application
CTICU Travel Nurse Responsibilities
- Provide comprehensive nursing care to post-operative cardiac surgery and critically ill adult patients
- Care for patients following CABG, cardiac catheterization or intervention, and other cardiac procedures
- Monitor and manage arterial lines, central lines, PICCs, pulmonary artery catheters, FloTrac/Vigileo systems, and other advanced hemodynamic monitoring equipment
- Titrate cardiac, vasoactive, sedation, insulin, and other continuous intravenous medications
- Care for patients requiring IABP, Impella, CRRT/CVVHD, ventilator support, BiPAP, CPAP, and high-flow nasal cannula therapy
- Interpret ABGs and dysrhythmias and respond appropriately to changes in patient condition
- Provide neurological monitoring and care for patients with stroke, post-brain surgery needs, EVDs, and ventriculostomies
- Administer blood products, procedural sedation, and prescribed medications safely
- Manage surgical wounds, drains, wound vacs, infection prevention measures, and isolation precautions
- Collaborate with respiratory therapy, pharmacy, radiology, rehabilitation, IV services, rapid response teams, and other interdisciplinary partners
- Float between ICU-level and step-down assignments as required and participate in weekend and holiday coverage
