Description:
The Nurse Manager of the Emergency Department assumes 24-hour responsibility for overall assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of patient care.
The Nurse Manager has oversight and direction for the emergency department and is accountable for planning, directing, leading, and evaluating nursing care within the department.
This role fosters an environment of collaboration and respect among all healthcare team members.
Weekend and holiday coverage is required as part of this role.
The Nurse Manager performs related duties as needed.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities:
Operational Performance
Develop long-term unit staffing schedules and ensure adequate daily coverage based on established staffing needs.
Develop measures and monitor unit operational performance metrics, including agency and overtime costs, vacancy, and turnover rates.
Oversee daily workflow, staffing, orientation, training, and development of employees within the department.
Responsible for ongoing quality/performance improvement processes related to the emergency department.
Promote and support a collaborative team approach in providing care for all emergency department and trauma patients.
Treat others with respect and consideration while supporting and interpreting policies, procedures, and objectives.
Monitor customer satisfaction scores and implement plans to improve scores.
Monitor patient volume, quality of care, and performance of staff to identify areas for improvement.
Maintain a departmental dashboard that includes information and progress on people, service, quality, and leadership.
Investigate patient, physician, and staff complaints/concerns and work towards resolution.
Maintain required competencies for self and all employees within the department.
Participate in a professional organization.
Clinical Practice/Patient Care
Collaborate with nursing leadership to establish nursing care standards and evaluate staff compliance.
Identify protocols affecting the patient population served and keep nursing staff informed.
Demonstrate self-development and stay current on various clinical management and healthcare topics.
Maintain a safe and caring environment for patients, families, and staff that is conducive to positive health teaching and maintenance.
Develop mechanisms to assess the environment's effectiveness.
Ensure equal access to treatment for all individuals in need.
Management
Participate in the overall planning process for the service.
Conduct monthly meetings with staff to address equipment, scheduling, goals, and objectives, performance metrics, improvement activities, and staff concerns.
Human Resource Development/Management
Educate and evaluate staff.
Work with nursing leadership to counsel, discipline, and terminate staff as necessary.
Educate staff in both new and existing department procedures and systems.
Create and maintain an atmosphere of respect and courtesy toward patients, staff, and colleagues.
