Nurses will encounter minor patients and critically ill patients, including those in cardiac arrest. The unit provides care for Level 1 and Level 2 trauma patients in a specialized trauma bay. Traveling nurses may care for trauma patients once they have been stabilized and transferred to a pod. Proficiency in titrating vasopressor drips, cardiac drips, and antihypertensive medications is essential. Nurse-to-patient ratios vary from 1:3 to 1:5 based on acuity and department needs. There is a minimum of three attending physicians available at all times. Two charge nurses are present on each shift, along with a house supervisor available 24/7. ED technicians are assigned with a ratio of 1:9. Respiratory therapists assist with ventilatory equipment, though nurses may need to troubleshoot. Nurses are expected to interpret rhythms and recognize life-threatening conditions. Radiology staff handle the transport of patients for imaging. Nurses and technicians are responsible for drawing labs. Shifts are 12 hours long, with various time slots available. Traveling nurses are scheduled by a manager and may include time-off requests. There is a weekend requirement of every other weekend, along with holiday commitments based on departmental needs. No on-call requirement is expected for traveling nurses. Floating is rare, and if it occurs, nurses are expected to assist on other units. Scrub colors should be tasteful with solid colored undergarments.
