Job Title: Registered Nurse Profession: RN (Registered Nurse) Specialty: Emergency Room Duration: 13 weeks Shift: 12H Nights - every other weekend Hours per Shift: 36 hours per week Experience: Minimum 3 years License: Required Certifications: BLS, ACLS, NIHSS, TNCC, PALS or ENPC Must-Have: Preferably 3 or more years of ED experience Good communication and assessment skills Prior travel experience preferred but not required Description: Department operates as a State certified Level III trauma center. Cath Lab is available Monday through Friday from 0800 to 1700. Facility is certified as a Primary Stroke Center. The Emergency Room has 2 triage beds and 2 trauma bays, as well as 7 additional beds. There is a separate triage area in the Emergency Room. Travelers with triage experience may be assigned to triage. Patients are not held in the Emergency Department; inpatient beds are always available. There is one psych/seclusion room equipped with video monitoring. Security is in-house 24/7 and floats throughout the facility. On average, approximately 40 patients are treated in the Emergency Room each day. The nurse to patient ratio is variable, typically 3-4 patients to 1 nurse during peak times. Common diagnoses include abdominal pain, falls, and chest pain, with about 20% of volume being pediatric. Common medication drips include antibiotics, cardiac medications, heparin, TPA, and insulin. An ED physician is present 24 hours a day, along with a mid-level provider during mid-shifts. There is an ED charge nurse every day who also takes patients. House supervisors are available 24/7. Support staff includes a combination of nurse aides, EMTs, paramedics, and LPNs. Respiratory therapy is available in-house 24/7. Lab services are provided, including ABGs. Only registered nurses are required to read their own EKG strips. X-ray and CT services are available adjacent to the Emergency Room. Phlebotomy tasks are shared between nurses and lab staff. Scheduling is primarily block scheduling with rotating 12-hour shifts. Travelers typically work every other weekend and one holiday during the winter and summer. There are no call or standby requirements, and no floating is required. Gray scrubs are the required dress code, and they are provided by the facility. Unit-specific orientation usually involves working alongside another nurse for 3 shifts. The charting system in use is EPIC.
