Description: The emergency room consists of 56 beds, with hall beds bringing this number to 60-70. There is a fast track area with 6 beds. A separate triage area exists with 5 beds. Travelers can take a triage test and may be assigned accordingly, though department staff are usually assigned. There are 18 beds designated for holding inpatients awaiting bed placement. ER RNs manage their own ER holds, although inpatient RNs may float to the ED to take an inpatient assignment for ER holds. Separate psych/seclusion rooms are available, with a secured hall containing 6 private treatment rooms. In-house security is present. Approximately 170-200 patients are seen each day. Ratios are 1:3 for general cases and can increase to 1:4 for low acuity cases. Common diagnoses include cardiac issues, stroke, sepsis, DKA, AMS, respiratory problems, abdominal pain, and mental health conditions. Both ED physicians and mid-level providers are available. Charge nurses and house supervisors are present. ED techs, CNAs from inpatient areas, and paramedics provide patient support. ED techs perform EKGs, while respiratory therapists manage respiratory equipment. Nurses and ED techs primarily draw blood. Radiology services are located next to the emergency department, and transport assists with patient movement. Shifts and scheduling are based on department needs. Weekend requirements include every other weekend. Holidays must be worked during November and December, but exceptions may be considered based on unit demands. There is no call or standby requirement, but extra shifts are available. The dress code is any professional colors. Unit-specific orientation includes compliance with policies and education/training. No requests for time off will be considered for the first full week of a traveler’s assignment. The facility can cancel up to 4 shifts per 13-week assignment. The charting system is EPIC.
