The ED RN assesses patient needs and identifies urgent or emergent care priorities. The ED RN collaboratively provides direct care, applies appropriate interventions, and evaluates patient progress. The ED RN evidences skill in the use of invasive and non-invasive procedures, treatments, and therapeutic interventions. The ED RN utilizes the principles of relationship-based care to alleviate anxiety and address pain, discomfort, and safety. He/She assesses the physiological, psychosocial, emotional, and cultural needs of patients of all age groups, their families, and support systems. The RN connects with patients and families during triage, establishes rapport, and addresses comfort needs. The RN conducts a primary assessment of critical needs and documents any deviations from norms within acceptable time frames. The RN uses observation and patient/family interviews to conduct secondary assessments. He/She identifies contributing factors, health history, and events preceding the emergent health event. The RN reassesses patients to identify responses to treatment and changes in condition. The RN encourages trust and cooperation among team members to achieve the best possible patient outcomes. He/She teaches others as appropriate and delegates tasks consistent with education, training, and scope of practice. The RN takes personal responsibility for safeguarding public safety through compliance with infection prevention strategies. The RN prepares patients and families for diagnostic procedures and treatments. He/She makes appropriate referrals for post-emergency care and assesses learning styles to maximize understanding. The RN seeks to understand priorities for patients and families, placing them at the center of care. The RN embraces the importance of creating a healing environment as a key element of professional nursing practice. He/She keeps patients and significant others informed throughout the care process and anticipates needs. The RN maintains awareness of the patient's condition throughout the emergency visit. He/She updates patient communication boards throughout the ED stay.
