Travel Registered Nurse (RN) – Emergency Department (ER)

Position Overview

Department: Emergency Department (ER)
Unit Type: Level I Trauma Center
Beds: 65 private rooms, including 2 trauma bays
Shift: 12-hour shifts
Assignment: Travel RN

Required Qualifications & Certifications

  • Active Illinois RN license, or confirmation that the license application process has been initiated.
  • BLS
  • ACLS
  • ENPC or PALS
  • TNCC or TNS
  • Minimum 2 years of nursing experience preferred
  • At least 1 previous travel assignment preferred
  • Strong general emergency nursing skills required.
  • SANE RN experience preferred
  • Experience working in a teaching hospital/residency program preferred
  • Must be comfortable caring for patients across all age groups and a wide range of acuity levels.

Emergency Department Details

The ED provides care for a diverse patient population, ranging from newborns to elderly patients. Nurses will care for patients with conditions ranging from minor illnesses and injuries to critically ill and trauma patients.

Common patient populations and diagnoses include:

  • Cardiac arrest
  • Strokes
  • Myocardial infarctions/heart attacks
  • Critically ill patients
  • Level I and II trauma
  • A wide variety of emergency medical and surgical complaints

Patient Ratios: 1:3–5, depending on acuity and department needs.

Trauma Experience

Level I and II trauma patients are initially cared for in the trauma bays by a specialized trauma team. Travelers may care for trauma patients after stabilization and transfer to an ED pod but are not typically assigned as the primary nurse in the trauma bay.

Critical Care & Drips

ED nurses should be proficient in managing and titrating a wide variety of critical-care medications, including:

  • Vasopressors
  • Cardiac drips
  • Antihypertensive medications
  • Other critical-care infusions

Staffing & Support

  • Minimum of 3 attending physicians on duty at all times, with staffing varying by time of day.
  • 2 charge nurses per shift:
    • One manages incoming patients and telemetry radios.
    • One oversees the needs of the department.
  • Charge nurses do not routinely take patient assignments but may assist as the second nurse during traumas or critical patient situations.
  • House Supervisor available 24/7
  • ED Techs are available, with an approximate ratio of 1 tech to 9 patients.
  • Respiratory Therapists are available to assist with respiratory equipment and treatments.

Respiratory Equipment

The ED utilizes:

  • Ventilators
  • CPAP
  • BiPAP
  • High-flow oxygen

RNs should be able to appropriately manage and troubleshoot this equipment, with support from Respiratory Therapy.

Telemetry & Monitoring

  • Monitor techs are available.
  • ED RNs are expected to independently recognize and appropriately respond to cardiac rhythms, including life-threatening rhythms.
  • Phillips monitors are used.
  • Travelers will receive orientation to the monitoring system.

Laboratory & Diagnostic Services

  • Nurses and ED Techs draw laboratory specimens.
  • Phlebotomy may draw labs for boarder patients when needed.
  • Radiology staff or transport personnel transport patients for X-ray and CT studies.

Scheduling & Shifts

12-hour shifts available:

  • Days: 7:00 AM, 8:00 AM, or 9:00 AM starts
  • Mid Shifts: 10:00 AM, 11:00 AM, 12:00 PM, 1:00 PM, or 3:00 PM starts
  • Nights: 7:00 PM start

Travelers are not required to rotate between day and night shifts.

Travelers do not self-schedule. Scheduling is managed by the scheduling manager. Time-off requests may be submitted with the contract and will be reviewed based on the department's ability to accommodate them.

Block scheduling may be accommodated when staffing allows.

Weekend Requirements

  • Every other weekend rotation is required.
  • For most shifts, weekends are Saturday/Sunday.
  • For the 7:00 AM–7:00 PM shift, the weekend requirement is Friday/Saturday.

Holiday Requirements

Holiday coverage is required every other holiday or based on department needs. Holiday requirements may be discussed and negotiated as part of the contract request.

Call & Standby

  • No call requirement for travel nurses.
  • No standby requirement specified.

Floating

Travel RNs may occasionally be floated to other units as a "Help All" resource.

  • Floating is rare.
  • ED travelers are typically not the first to be floated.
  • An ED RN would not be expected to take a full patient assignment/team on another unit.
  • If floated, the nurse would generally function in a Help All capacity.

Dress Code

  • No specific scrub color required.
  • Scrubs should be tasteful and professional.
  • Shirts worn underneath scrubs must be solid-colored.

 

OSF Important Information

Local Rate

A local rate applies to clinicians whose permanent address is within 50 miles of the facility.

  • Local clinicians receive a $25 reduction from the regular bill rate and OT bill rate.

Call-Off Policy

OSF may call off the equivalent of 12 hours during a 13-week assignment without penalty or payment for the cancelled shift.

Orientation

  • 12 hours of non-billable orientation
  • Guaranteed hours do not apply during orientation.

  • Last four digits of the clinician's SSN
  • Clinician's middle initial
  • Requested time off
  • Active Illinois RN license or confirmation that the license application process has been initiated
  • Confirmation that the candidate understands OSF is a Drug-Free Campus and must provide a negative drug screen covering all required panels

Drug-Free Campus

Candidates must understand and comply with OSF's Drug-Free Campus policy and successfully complete the required drug screening before beginning the assignment.
