Position Overview

This is not a typical ER RN position. The selected RN will primarily work in the Emergency Department while also being responsible for boarding patients in the ER and floating to Medical-Surgical (MS) and CCU as needed.

The ideal candidate must be highly flexible, possess recent experience in ER and community/critical access hospital settings, and be comfortable caring for patients across ER, MS/Tele, and CCU environments.

Required Experience

• Minimum 3 years of ER nursing experience.
• Recent ER experience in a Critical Access Hospital (CAH) or Community Hospital strongly required.
• Recent experience boarding patients in the ER.
• Recent experience with CCU/ICU and MS/Telemetry patients.
• Must be comfortable floating to MS and CCU in an ER RN capacity.
• Must have recent Cerner experience.
• Strong IV skills and medication administration experience.
• Ability to start IVs and administer medications.
• EKG and rhythm interpretation experience.
• Must be flexible and willing to follow workflow to cover staffing gaps.

Required Certifications

• BLS
• ACLS
• PALS
• NIHSS

Preferred: TNCC, ENPC

ER Department Details

• 26 beds
• 3 trauma bays
• 4-bed Fast Track treatment area
• Approximately 60 patients per day
• Typical RN ratio: 1:4
• No separate triage area; ED nurses may be responsible for triaging patients.
• ER holds are intermixed within the ED, and ED nurses generally care for their own boarded patients.
• One designated lower-ligature-risk room with camera for behavioral health patients.
• Security is available 24/7 just outside the ED.

Patient Population

The ED cares for patients ranging from pediatric through geriatric, including:

• Abdominal pain
• Altered mental status
• STEMI patients requiring transfer
• Stroke
• Chest pain
• COVID
• Shortness of breath
• Patients requiring moderate sedation

Clinical & Technical Skills

• IV insertion and medication administration
• EKG and rhythm interpretation
• Telemetry monitoring and rhythm interpretation
• ER patient boarding
• Care of MS/Telemetry and CCU patients
• Ability to manage patients while floating outside the primary ED assignment
• Must be comfortable working with ventilated and respiratory-compromised patients as needed

Care Team & Resources

• ED providers include MDs, DOs, PAs, and NPs.
• Charge Nurse is available 24/7 and takes patients.
• House Supervisor: 6 PM–6 AM weekdays; 24/7 weekends and holidays.
• Medics and PCTs provide support, including EKGs, IVs, medication administration, transport, and sitter responsibilities.
• Respiratory Therapy is available 24/7, typically with an RT assigned to the ED.
• RT assists with breathing treatments, ABGs, intubation, and ventilator management.
• Nurses monitor and interpret telemetry strips.
• Radiology is located close to the ED; radiology staff typically handle transport, with the RN accompanying critical patients when required.

Schedule

• 12-hour shifts
• Possible shift times:
  • 7 AM–7 PM
  • 11 AM–11 PM
  • 3 PM–3 AM
• 6-week scheduling cycle
• Staff self-schedule, with management balancing coverage based on department needs.
• Initial schedules will focus on filling staffing gaps.
• No block scheduling
• Every 3rd weekend required
• Must be flexible to work holidays when needed.
• No call/standby requirement

Floating & Orientation

• Must be willing to float to MS and CCU based on facility needs.
• ER nurses will care for boarded patients.
• Required orientation includes:
  • 2 shifts in the ER
  • 2 half-shifts in MS
  • 2 half-shifts in CCU
• Additional department orientation: 1–2 shifts with a preceptor.

• Navy Blue scrubs
• No facial piercings per facility policy; nose piercing is permitted when covered by a mask.
• No gauges.
• Tattoos are permitted as long as they are not inappropriate or vulgar.
• RTO must be submitted upfront.
• Punctuality and commitment to completing the full contract are essential.
