Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced Emergency Room Registered Nurse (RN) for a travel assignment in Hastings, Nebraska. This opportunity is ideal for an RN with strong emergency nursing experience, excellent assessment skills, and the ability to provide safe, efficient care in a fast-paced Emergency Department.

The department is a State-Certified Level III Trauma Center and Primary Stroke Center, providing care to a diverse patient population including adult, pediatric, cardiac, trauma, and psychiatric patients.

Emergency Department Highlights

  • Primary Stroke Center
  • Approximately 40 patients per day
  • 11-bed department:
    • 2 triage beds
    • 2 trauma bays
    • 7 additional treatment beds
  • Separate triage area
  • No Fast Track
  • No ED holding area; inpatient beds are available for admitted patients
  • Dedicated psych/seclusion room with video monitoring
  • 24/7 in-house security
  • Board-certified ED physician available 24/7
  • NP/PA coverage during the mid-shift
  • 24/7 Respiratory Therapy coverage
  • CT and MRI located adjacent to the ED
  • Cath Lab available Monday–Friday, 8:00 AM–5:00 PM

Patient Population

Common patient presentations include:

  • Abdominal pain
  • Chest pain
  • Falls and trauma
  • Medical emergencies
  • Cardiac conditions
  • Psychiatric patients
  • Pediatric emergencies, representing approximately 20% of ED volume

Nurse-to-Patient Ratio

Ratios vary based on patient volume and acuity. The highest typical assignment is approximately 3–4 patients per RN, generally for short periods during peak arrival times.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform comprehensive emergency assessments and provide timely interventions.
  • Deliver care to medical, trauma, cardiac, pediatric, and psychiatric patients.
  • Administer medications and manage emergency therapies and infusions.
  • Initiate IVs and draw labs when starting IV access.
  • Perform 12-lead EKGs and interpret cardiac rhythms.
  • Monitor patients using Philips cardiac monitoring equipment.
  • Read and interpret own cardiac strips.
  • Safely transport patients requiring cardiac monitoring.
  • Collaborate with physicians, NP/PA, RT, laboratory, radiology, and other healthcare professionals.
  • Maintain accurate documentation and uphold patient safety and infection-control standards.

Common Drips / Therapies

Experience with medications and infusions including:

  • Antibiotics
  • Cardiac medications
  • Heparin
  • TPA
  • Insulin

Required Certifications

  • BLS
  • ACLS
  • NIHSS
  • TNCC
  • PALS or ENPC

Experience Requirements

  • 3+ years of Emergency Department experience preferred
  • Strong clinical assessment and critical-thinking skills
  • Excellent communication and teamwork abilities
  • Prior travel nursing experience preferred but not required
  • Pediatric emergency care experience is highly valued

Staffing & Clinical Support

The ED is supported by a multidisciplinary team including:

  • CNAs
  • EMTs
  • Paramedics
  • LPNs
  • Patient Sitters
  • Registered Nurses
  • ED Charge Nurse

An ED Charge Nurse is present daily and takes patient assignments. A House Supervisor is available 24/7.

Additional Clinical Support

  • Respiratory Therapy available 24/7
  • Lab performs ABGs
  • Nursing and support staff perform 12-lead EKGs
  • CT and MRI are located next to the ED
  • X-Ray provides patient transport
  • Phlebotomy and nursing share lab-draw responsibilities

Scheduling

  • 12-hour shifts
  • Facility utilizes a scheduler and attempts to accommodate block scheduling
  • Every other weekend typically required
  • One winter holiday required: Thanksgiving, Christmas, or New Year's
  • One summer holiday required: Memorial Day, July 4th, or Labor Day
  • No call or standby
  • No floating requirement

Orientation

Travelers generally complete 3 orientation shifts alongside another experienced ED nurse.

Dress Code

Gray scrubs are provided by the facility.
