Emergency Department / Trauma RN
Position Overview
We are seeking an experienced Emergency Department / Trauma RN to join a high-volume emergency department in Arizona. The unit cares for a broad range of emergency and trauma patients and provides an opportunity to work in a fast-paced Level I Trauma environment.
New Requirement: The manager may consider candidates with less than 2 years of experience, provided they have at least 6 months of Level I Trauma experience.
Unit & Facility Details
- Department: Emergency Department / Trauma
- Acute Care Beds: 36
- Subacute Beds: 54
- Trauma Bays: 6 — travelers are not assigned to trauma bays
- Annual Patient Volume: Approximately 88,000 patients
- Daily Volume: Approximately 250–300 patients
- Typical RN-to-Patient Ratio: 1:4
- EMR: Cerner
- Telemetry: Philips monitors; RNs must be able to read and interpret strips
- Respiratory Therapy: Available 24/7
- Pharmacy: Available 24/7; pharmacist present in the ER approximately 10 hours/day
- Multiple physicians and advanced practice providers available in-house
Patient Population
The ED manages a diverse and high-acuity patient population, including:
- Emergency and trauma patients
- Burns
- Pediatric patients are stabilized and transferred out as appropriate
- Psychiatric patients, including approximately 30–40 psych holds
- Patients with complex medical and emergency conditions
- Spinal cord and TBI-related patients
Required Certifications
- BLS – Required
- ACLS – Required
- PALS – Required
- TNCC – Preferred
- ATCN – Preferred
Important: ENPC cannot be accepted in place of PALS.
Required Experience
- At least 6 months of Level I Trauma experience – Required
- Manager may consider candidates with less than 2 years of total experience if the Level I Trauma requirement is met.
- Strong Emergency Department experience is preferred.
- Previous trauma experience and the ability to work effectively in a high-volume ED are highly valued.
Key Clinical Skills
Candidates should be comfortable with:
- Emergency and trauma nursing
- Telemetry monitoring and rhythm interpretation
- High-acuity patient assessment
- Emergency interventions and stabilization
- Maintaining sterile technique
- Foley catheter insertion
- Central line dressing changes
- Port-a-cath care, where applicable
- Working collaboratively with physicians, RT, pharmacy, and other clinical teams
Staffing & Support
- Charge Nurses: 2 Charge RNs per shift; may task staff or carry a light patient assignment
- Patient Care Technicians: 4 PCTs primarily supporting sitter needs
- RT: 24/7
- Pharmacy: 24/7
- Hospitalists/Intensivists available in-house, with approximately 2–8 physicians depending on coverage
- Midlevel providers are also utilized
- Anesthesia support available
- Core RNs support IV-related needs
Schedule & Weekend Requirement
- Shift: As listed in the job posting
- Weekend Requirement: 4 weekend shifts per month, based on unit discretion
- Saturday and Sunday are considered weekend days.
Floating
Travelers may be required to float and should be comfortable working across the designated facilities:
- St. Joseph's Main
- St. Joseph's Westgate
- AZ General Laveen
- Free-Standing ER – Litchfield Park
- Free-Standing ER – Glendale
Facilities are approximately 30 minutes apart, and travelers may be floated mid-shift based on operational needs.
Travelers are required to have their own vehicle.
Orientation & Clinical Competency
Day 1 Pass/Fail Exam
- Travelers must complete a pass/fail exam on Day 1 of orientation.
- A study guide will be provided through FDI SIMs.
- Candidates must successfully complete the exam as part of the orientation process.
DYS Exam
- Candidates are required to pass the DYS exam before accepting the assignment.
- Two attempts are permitted.
- Failure results in DNU status for 6 months with CS AZ and the Sacramento Region.
SIMs Lab
Travelers assigned to St. Joseph's Main and/or St. Joseph's Westgate will complete SIMs Lab competency training, including:
- Foley catheter insertion
- Central line dressing changes
Exceptions:
- NyICU: Foley catheter insertion only
- ED: Foley catheter insertion and port-a-cath insertion instead of central line dressing change
The SIMs Lab is pass/fail, with particular emphasis on maintaining a sterile field. Travelers are expected to demonstrate competency in these frequently performed nursing skills.
Additional educational training may include:
- Patient lifts
- Restraints
- Wound care
These areas are educational and may vary based on facility-specific equipment and policies.
Orientation
- Floor-specific orientation: 2–3 shifts
- Travelers will also complete required facility orientation and competency assessments.
Dress Code & Professional Requirements
- Scrub Color: Navy
- Natural hair color required
- No facial piercings
- Men must be clean-shaven for fit testing
Submission Requirements
- 50-mile radius rule applies
- Driver's license is the source of truth for determining radius and must be submitted with the profile
- No local rates
- Medical Solutions will conduct the initial pre-screen
- If clinically recommended, the profile will be forwarded to the manager for approval to offer
Important Traveler Requirements
- Travel teams must have their own vehicle
- Candidates must be prepared to float between designated facilities as needed.
- Strong sterile-technique competency is essential.
- Candidates who are not comfortable performing required SIMs Lab skills may not be an appropriate fit for this assignment.
Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate is a confident Emergency Department RN with Level I Trauma experience, strong emergency assessment skills, and the ability to manage a high-volume, fast-paced environment. The nurse should be adaptable, comfortable floating between designated facilities, proficient in telemetry interpretation and emergency nursing skills, and committed to maintaining strict sterile technique and clinical competency standards.
