- Shift: Rotating 12-hour shifts, primarily 7:30 a.m.-8:00 p.m. or 11:30 a.m.-12:00 a.m.; occasional 3:30 p.m.-4:00 a.m. shifts
- Weekend and Holiday Coverage: Every other weekend and every other holiday required
- Call: No call
- Patient Population: Pediatric patients, ages 0-20
- Patient Ratio: Approximately 1:4; ratios may vary based on departmental needs
- Technology: Epic electronic health record, Alaris pumps, EPOC, and i-STAT point-of-care testing
Emergency Department Registered Nurse Requirements
- Current Registered Nurse (RN) license in Virginia or an active compact-state license
- At least 1 year of professional RN experience required
- Two years of Emergency Department nursing experience preferred
- Recent emergency or critical care nursing experience preferred; pediatric-specific experience is not required
- Current BLS, ACLS, PALS, NIHSS, and CPI certification, or completion of an approved de-escalation module
- Nursing diploma or transcript required
- Ability to successfully complete an EKG examination during orientation
- Demonstrated ability to provide safe, compassionate care to neonates, infants, children, adolescents, and young adults
- Strong patient assessment, triage, prioritization, communication, and clinical decision-making skills
- Ability to remain calm, adaptable, and collaborative in a high-acuity pediatric emergency environment
Pediatric Emergency Nurse Responsibilities
- Perform initial and ongoing patient assessments, identify changes in condition, and establish individualized plans of care
- Provide emergency nursing care for medical conditions, trauma, injuries, behavioral health concerns, and life-threatening emergencies
- Prioritize and manage care for multiple pediatric patients across a broad range of acuities
- Administer medications and treatments safely in accordance with professional standards and applicable policies
- Monitor patient responses to interventions, evaluate outcomes, and revise the plan of care as needed
- Assist with stabilization, resuscitation, crisis intervention, conscious sedation, and other emergency procedures
- Collaborate with physicians, advanced practice providers, EMS, specialty teams, social services, and other interdisciplinary partners
- Educate patients and families while providing compassionate, age-appropriate, relationship-centered care
- Protect patient privacy, promote safety, use infection-control precautions, and participate in quality-improvement initiatives
- Assist with rapid response activities and provide charge nurse coverage on night shifts as needed
- Document care accurately in Epic and communicate effectively during handoffs and care transitions
